Exclamation Very Important Info: Does your 2.5 Sound like a Truck?

Well fellas. I havent posted anything in a very long time, but i have come across some important information for 96 and 97 2.5 TL owners who have less than 150k miles. If your car is unusually noisy and sounds like a truck, it turns out your probably have a cracked exhaust manifold. It is appearantly a very very very common defect in the 2.5s and you are covered under warranty to get it replaced for free untill 150k miles. My manifold is cracked but i have a 98 so i am shit outta luck.
I hope this helps someone. Sorry if this is a repost, if it is dont bust my balls for it, i was too lazy to search.

damn i was sooo gonna post a questions asking this, but my TL at least from what i can tell sounds fine, BUT when i first start up the engine (usually cold) there is ALOT of exhaust gasses that are expelled like you can smell it soo bad and thats from inside the car with the doors closed.. any ideas what this might be? would having a cracked exhaust manifold give me a CEL?

The crack will not present a CEL. Just get your shit looked into at the dealership, and if they try to give you any shit, I work at an Acura Dealership, so I can ask to get a copy of the Service bulletin from my service manager to back you up!

Cracked exhaust can make a lot of noise at cold start and gradually decrease till almost normal. Mine did this before Acura replaced the exhaust manifold a few weeks ago. I did not have a CEL set due to this condition, but it is possible for a cracked exhaust to cause code P0420, catalytic converter efficiency fault. I have had this problem w/ other vehicles; subaru and toyota. The 2.5TL manual lists exhaust leak as one of the reasons for P0420.

What code do you have?

good luck

i had the same problem when i first bought the car used, i got the dealer to weld the crack in the manifold, cant be too healthy, but it didnt make the nasty noise from the exhaust anymore..car still runs a little rough, especially in the colds..but that seems usual for our cars from what ive been reading.

Fuck mine sounded exactly like that before I traded it in. BUT, a lot of the sound went away after I put back my stock intake. That's interesting thoug that it's still covered, WTF! Wish I'd known that....

I had to wait a couple of days until they ordered and had the new exhaust manifold, before bringing the car in the morning and picking up after work. They had it ready by early afternoon for pickup.

Regards

It's free and it covers everything except the flex pipe connecting your manifold to you exaust.(cost me aorund 200). Plus they give you a free tune up with new spark plugs...oil change...car wash...

Instead of the engine purring like a kitten, or just having a quiet hum, the engine sounds like a deisel. It growls and is just noisy. Dont know how to describe it other than that.

I had a cracked manifold and got it replaced under the extended warranty - glad I knew about it. And I was not charged one cent for my repairs, not even for the flex pipe.

Just to help, when someone has a cracked manifold, they will notice a definite sound change and can even pop the hood and hear some exhaust noise coming from the engine bay. But you will feel more heat coming from under the car than normal. I know I did. Basically, if you have a cracked manifold, you will know it.
