Which TL Gen had most transmission failures?
From searching here, it seems 2nd Gen are guaranteed to fail before 150k but how reliable were the 1st gen for the 4 and 6 cylinder engines?
Reason I'm asking is cuz I'm considering a 98TL 3.2 which had the tranny replaced about 20k and 3 years ago
Thanks

2 Gen would be my take. There is no 4 cyl 1st Gen - only an I5 and V6.
I have 175,000 miles on my 2.5 TL (I5), original transmission. Change out the fluid every 30K, come to a complete stop before changing gears/putting it in park and all should be good.

The transmissions in 1st generation TL's were very reliable. It's a COMPLETELY different design in the 99+ TLs.

My '98 3.2 TL is almost at 210,000 miles and I believe it still has the original transmission (I bought the car used). My mechanic told me that one of his customers had the exact same car and it went at least 300,000 miles before the transmission went.
