Alright dumbass, here are some facts:

The first gen TL cost $8000 more than the 2nd gen TL. So right there it puts the car in a different price bracket. Combine that with some inflation and you're probably closer to a $10,000 price difference over the 4 years.

Second, the 1st gen TL is older, meaning fewer cars are on the road.

Third, it appealed to a different demographic. In fact, several 1st gen TL owners I personally know are the original owners, they still have them. They might poke around online but they are not on Acurazine hopping onto the picture gallery.

Now, lets all be nice. Our TLs (except those ugly 4G TLs) are great vehicles and we should all be proud.

Signed,

Ken (who has owned a 1st gen, 2nd gen and 3rd gen TL. Guess what? I kept the '97 out of all those) __________________

good one ken kept the first gen out of all those

I see 2nd gen TLs everyday whereas a first gen is a rare sight. If I remember correctly they only built 80k over 3(or 4?) years for the whole planet. I believe a lot of them are in Japan and a bunch scattered around other countries besides the US and Canada. So basically this car is rare and there aren't that many in North America whose members populate this forum.

And yeah I'm with Ken on whatever he said. He owned all gens except the latest and is one of the very few people who can compare these cars without talking out of his ass.

Sounds about right, maybe 100k tops for the US.

They weren't really for sale in 1995 due to a trade dispute between the US and Japan over cars and some sort of an importation tax on luxury cars.

So that leaves 1996, 1997 and part of 1998. The 2nd gen TL went on sale in 1998.

Why can't we all just get along?

This will go on forever. One side will say the 1G looks better, the other side will say the 2G looks better.

One side will say the car is rare and special, the other side will say the car is rare because nobody wanted to buy it.

There's nothing wrong with voicing a particular dislike about a car. There is something wrong in putting the entire car down to make your car seem better.

IIRC, 79,455 units were made. The UA3 wasn't allowed to be imported in 1995, so the range for those is 96-98, but the UA2's range is 95-98.

<- One of the first UA3s made in July of 1995.

I agree with Aman, we should just let it drop. The same arguments have been made over the years, and it boils down to preferring a more sporty looking car, or a more laid back cruiser. Another factor in the rarity of the 1G is that not many people were ready to shell out that much money for a Japanese import. A BMW friend couldn't believe the original sticker price of my car when I showed it to him. He was shocked that it cost more than his BMW did in 97.

~Cheers~

Hey, shut the F$%K up, my car is the best!....naw just kidding. Well said Aman. This has been rather funny and for my part I was just trying to bust Inpired's balls a bit for his aggression.

This is a 1st G forum so obviously this car will be supported. Go hang out at the 2nd G forum and it would be reversed.

actually, aside from the resident fruitloop you guys met earlier...

there is none of this group bashing of a "our gen is better than this gen" as i see in here from time to time.

we rarely talk about other TL's (unless its the 4th gen Alcatraz)

i've come on here numerous time to poke around and i seem to always find one post saying "my car may be old or outdated but at least its not a shitty tranny failing 2nd Gen"

like i said, i like 1-3Gen TL's when modded classy..
but it seems people put the 2nd gen down (usually its tranny) when somebody starts a 1st Gen TL pride rally

So far I have test driven 3 2002 type s TL's. All three had slipping transmissions. The passenger side rear door panel was separated from the handle on all three. The leather was perfect on all of them. And they all had nasty transmission fluid. The one I drove yesterday still had reddish fluid, while the other two were grey/brown. No wonder the trannies slip...no one seemed to take care of them. I really like how the type s looks, but I can't find a mechanicaly sound one. And for the money I have to spend on a car...$7000... I can't find ANYTHING close to as nice as my 96.

At the end of the day a tl is a tl people!
1stgen tl
2ndgen tl
3rdgen tl
4thgen tl
guess what they are all tl's!!!!!!

We will have our preference, i love my 2ndgen (and so do the ladies) lol,
each gen has their ups and downs
no car is perfect

1st gen - looks classy more vipish look than all of the tl's idle problems maybe? At least my moms did
2ndgen - looks sporty and classy, tranny problems(still have my original hitting 140kmiles)
3rdgen - sick and sporty, fading interior dashes
4thgen - looks are not all that, but they haul ass

so as we can see they are all sick cars, and we all have our own opinion, and yes we are entitled to our own opinion but lets not bach our own cars lets bash some volkswagons or something

Neglect is the problem with the 1G no one is willing to fork out the money just give up and say the car has no more value. If so why is there so many people out messing around in Legends thats an even older car. Just all depends again on how much you love your TL. Not me she still faithful to me and I'm a be likewise.

A little late to this discussion, but having driven 3rd gen TL and now an RL, I have to say the longitudinally mounted engine of the 1st gen is superior. The RL's turning radius is atrocious. The 1st gen TL turned like a RWD car.

Plus my 1st gen is still in the family. It's starting to show a little age (throwing a CEL every so often), but all in all it has been maintenance free.
