sub enclosures...

I'm Going to build a box for a 10" sub, and I was hoping some of y'all would post some pictures of your trunk set-ups.
Thanks!

I just bought the wood at lowes. I'm using the stock HU, with a line output converter for the amp. I haven'tfound a sub yet. I'm just starting as cheap as I can, and then I will build my way up.

What kind of "wood" did you buy?
hopefully 3/4 MDF?

I'm not sure what I got. I call it partical board. I'm pretty sure its 3/4. It was in the scrap box at lowes. I got four of the biggest sheets that would fit in my trunk.

Hey, If I were you I would read up on building boxes first.
Second; I would choose a sub, then build a box custom tailored to the sub.
It sounds like you don't have a complete grasp on the subject quite yet.

I talked to a friend of mine at a stereo store. He said a sealed box is the most unversal style. I want it to hit hard and quick.

You're right, I really don't know what I'm doing, lol.

You have to match the airspace to your sub, and if it's particle board, be prepared to have it shatter on the first hard bass hit, haha. How big is your sub going to be? I like 8s and 10s. Had a couple different 12s, and even a dual 10 and didn't like any of them, but that's just me.

~Cheers~

Correct, but like the poster above me, you have to match the correct air space with the particular sub.

I suggest finding a subwoofer first!

Its all subjective.
some people will swear by one particular brand/model.
it also depends on your needs/what kind of music you listen to.
Go to Bestbuy and listen to some subwoofers, then go to car toys, etc.
My point is to LISTEN!
you said your friend works at a stereo store. I bet he can get the hook ups on speakers.
YOU have to do your homework. you simply cant just pair a sub and amp combo.
you have to match the electrical impedance from the amp to the sub.
if not, you'll be blowing subs and amps.
Take time to research.

I'll say it again, google terms like:
Ohms
RMS
peak power watts
how does subwoofers work
building a subwoofer box
sealed boxes
ported boxes
bandpass boxes
how does subwoofer push air
SQ
SPL

For the 3rd generation TL the trunk isn't designed for sound waves and keeps the sub from performing well.

Jason (CSWBIGG) has a lot of experience with sound and building boxes. he made the Miracle box, which can be seen here.

Rob(TRIOD3SIGNS) made a mini dream box, which can be seen here.

you gotta pay to play right?
Also, Do things right the first time (you'll spend far less money, rather than buidling a crap box then sometime down the road building a newer better box.)

if you must have bang, i suggest going to your friend that works at the audio shop and just buying a sub/amp/box/wires combo.
you'll spend about 300-400 dollars just to have something in your trunk. it'll come with a premade box.

It's a good thing I got a second job!
Maybe I should start with better door speakers before I worry about a sub.
I really want to keepthe factory HU. I don't like how aftermarket units look. Blue and green and red lights... yuck.

$300 for a sub and amp is a great deal. My friend bangs out budget sub installs for that price all day, with used stuff.

Anyway, what kind of music are you listening to?

~Cheers~

what is your budget?

i used to go on car audio forums all the time... and it all depends on what you like . SQ or SPL . people usually change their mids and highs and 6x9's before they put subs in otherwise you wont be able to hear the songs and you will hear nothing but bass . make sure u run a amp on the highs and mids also, they sound MUCH MUCH better

^ The truth.

I don't think our originals can handle it anymore due to age, but people have amped the factory speakers and were pleasantly surprised.

~Cheers~

P.S.
<--- SQ all the way!

yeah the speakers wont be able to handle them, i wouldnt recommend running factory speakers with a sub anyways because it wouldnt sound good at all. get a component set before you do anything

I've replaced the factory speakers already. The fronts are some brand I've never heard if, and the rear are Sony xplodes.
I listen to hiphop, things like Pitbull, akon, jay z, Jason derulo, ludacris, Flo-rida...
And sometimes country, and maybe some old stuff.

You guys have been a huge help do far!

The amp was free (neighbor) and so were the xplodes. I think, for now, I will just put newer, better quality speakers in her.
*sigh*

I really didnt mean to discourage you.
I think you should continue on with the project but buying bits and pieces here and there, and or saving up the full amount to drop on whatever you would like.

They're really not that bad, and actually factory stuff in Hondas usually is Pioneer for the speakers and Alpine for the HUs. As with everything, it depends on model, though.

Newer Zapco hasn't been as good as the old stuff, but honestly, what hasn't gotten worse in quality? The DDs, though are not on my personal list of subs to buy, though. I missed out on a Mac one and that got me pretty bummed.
