Stellar Fuel Economy

Okay, so winter is officially gone (it's no longer dipping into freezing) and I've noticed that my fuel economy in the city has SHOT up. I've also eased up a bit on my driving style. Those 2 factors alone, changed me from getting 125km per 1/4 tank (15L) to getting 175km out of the same amount!! This is in the CITY!

This is:

old: 12.5L/100km (19MPG)

to NEW: 8.6L/100km (27MPG)

So what happened? I knew driving style affected fuel economy, but I'm not driving like a grandma. I'm just not accelerating to stop lights anymore, and timing myself so that I don't have to stop as much. And the weather's been good. The only "mod" I have that's not really a mod is a K&N filter, and Goodyear TripleTred tires. Everything else is OE, stock.

Insane MPG

I have had my '04 TL 5AT for eight months and I will consistently get 24-25MPG in town and around 32-34MPG on the highway. Usually on the highway I will run around 80-85mph with the A/C....I never expected the car to get such good gas mileage. I have even double checked the trip computer to verify its accuracy and it has achieved the MPG on three different road trips.

I'm curious to see what happens to my fuel economy with the new motor. Right now I get horrible mileage, about 380 - 400 KMS to a tank. I do drive kinda hard, but not THAT bad!

Yours is a 3.2, so it will get worse mileage than the 2.5. Typically in the summer I get 10.5L/100km (22.5MPG) driving normally (not like a grandma), kinda going up to about 4000RPM or so when I accelerate.

ok, so how is this for weird? on one tank a few tanks ago, i got like 23 mpg or so. i didn't go long trips really, and i kinda got on it more than usual i'd say. then next tank i did nothing but drive highway back and forth to work. no hard accelerating to think of, etc. i got like 21 mpg. same gas station, same gas. wth? now it's the same.....not great, maybe 21 mpg. how does anyone else get 24+? is it cuz my tires could be bad? even after my new brakes, the steering wheel shimmies a little at stops...could it be cuz the other brakes wore them bad? would that ruin these brakes if the tires are bad? i just know that tires do affect mpg.

Is your transmission okay? If the lock-up torque converter isn't locking up (and dropping that extra 500rpm), then you will waste more gas through the transmission fluid absorbing your power. This happened to my friend's '89 Integra.
It is also HIGHLY dependent on weather. Cold weather will DESTROY your fuel economy. I do have newer tires though, and they are all at the correct pressure. Get your tires looked at by a tire shop. If they are worn badly, replace them. Does your steering wheel shimmy at high speeds?

Warm weather offers less air resistance. Rain/snow/cold weather will only slow your car down. In addition, heavy wheels and sticky tires will kill fuel economy.

It really didnt do anything to mine. At first it was worse simply because I was redlining constantly

But.. overall, the gear ratios and amount of torque are still constant, so it shouldnt change much. There is a different throttle body and ECU, so perhaps it swallows more air and fuel

Drive "softer"
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Fresh Fluids
Tire Pressure
Highest gear possible (typically no need to put it into D3)
Spark plugs/wires
Fuel system treatment (some people have very good luck with these, I just bought some stuff online)

driving softer -- trying
fuel filter -- thinking about it
air filter -- K&N done
fresh fluids -- all flushed cept brake and PS fluids
tire pressure -- 32 psi all around
i use D4
spark plugs/wires -- changed @ dealer for emmissions like 2 months ago
fuel system treatment -- i use fuel injector cleaner.....maybe i need to do the gas one

turns out tonite i filled up.....bout 1/2 tank....but according to my calculations i got a bit over 24 mpg i hope this keeps up

Haha, thats about where you should be. I did my fuel filter, and a write up, thought it was pretty easy. Someone else just replaced theres with my help, you can ask them for another oppinion if you want. I haven't seen a huge improvement in fuel economy, but I have definately felt a difference in fuel delivery to the engine.
