Thumbs down Snow + Acura TL = blah

Just went out this morning to do a little drifting in the new snowfall. Turned down a small residential development road that hadn't been plowed yet.

It felt like I was riding a boat in water. Turned around after 100ft BARELY making it out lol.

The TL is such a beast in the snow. Probably cause it's front wheel drive and weighs 4000lbs.

You were probably putting too much foot onto the pedal. You don't move if you have too much torque. That's one thing I'm going to miss about my J30 vs my TL.

No, I know when it's slipping. The 'boat' feeling was from the unplowed 6" of snow on the residential street. When I start out, I put it in 2nd gear to reduce the torque.

Another problem is probably my tires and the weight of the car.

The only slip I had was slowing down and turning into Best Buy. Course, my tires have less than 100 miles wear on them right now... so maybe that's just me. >.> How bald are your tires?

Oh they're not bald - they pass the 'penny check' for sure. Not bald at all. I just don't think they're made for snow you know.. :|

TL does great in the snow. It's the driver and tires that need to be taken care of.

I'm going to have to agree with pimpin-tl. So long as your TCS is on (ABS works) you're fine. I'm actually very pleased to report that despite the wretched noise my ABS makes, it is actually functional. I just tested my TL in the snow. Hit 50 mph and hit the brakes on a clear road and I didn't slide, skid, or anything. Went up a hill even, and it kept the torque low enough for me to slowly climb it. Very impressed with this car. Make sure your TCS is running, and double check your tires. Other than that, you might just have more ice on the road than I do.

I don't know lol. The amount of tread left of the tires was really all I was concerned about when I purchased the vehicle...never checked the actual brand

I have Fuzion HRIs and they are great tires IMO.

I had them when I first got the car and I just replaced 2 tires with the same brand.

I have not had one problem with these tires.

What size tires do you have?

I'm running with Yokohama Avid 60,000 H rated Touring tires. 205 65R/15 if I recall correctly. Might be 215. Whatever is standard.

205 is the standard.

The funny thing about Fuzions, the ZRi is a copy of my old Potenza S-03s, only made with a cheaper compound. Design-wise they looked almost identical, and I had the Fuzions on the SC400 but the Potenzas on the Inspire, .

I still think that no one should buy H-rated tires. Over-grip is better than under-grip and I love my W-rated tires, .

~Cheers~

Its not just about the amount of tread, its how that tread reacts to the cold.

Summer tires get very hard and slide around like hockey pucks below 40 degrees.

Summer tires = fail in snow.

I ran snows last winter and I can pull on any truck/suv/awd car....

It's all about the tires.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the tires are cheapo "All Season" hunks of rubber. They're okay for now - I know how to drive in the snow...it will just require a little less speed :P

Thats what I'm coming from and I can agree its great in the snow when properly prepared even with it being boosted. A set of good snow tires in a slightly narrower width and a 60lb bag of kitty litter in the trunk and you were fine in the snow. I think people forget that we didnt always have good tread designs and FWD with ABS and TCS to help us out.

My $.02 is that all seasons are usually NO seasons. A combo of good summer tires and snow tires is worth having over a single set of all seasons. With my TL being a beater/DD I'm not sure I'll commit to two sets of tires however I understand that there's only so much the all seasons will do for me this time of year.

I drove on Y-rated G-Force Radials last winter lol (different car). Fortunately this area saw little snow.

This year I had no problem maneuvering the TL through the 2+ feet of snow in the D.C. area. Good thing I have new tires (all season 235s)

You have a snowplow on your TL then? Please tell me the road was plowed first otherwise I'm not a believer.

The first gen TL does well in snow, but not unplowed snow (like in my first post on this thread - 10-12" at the time). It drives on ice like a boat.

Ok I embellished a bit. The total snow fall for the storm was around 2.5 feet. The roads had been plowed previously but more had quickly accumulated. So I would say there was between 8" to 1.5 feet of unplowed snow when I drove to the store (some roads had been plowed more so than others).

5AM Christmas Morning, I received a phone call:

"I'm stuck in the snow."

So I got out and went to help get his 96 Accord out of the snow. I unwittingly drove my TL straight through the same drift that he had plowed through. Except I didn't get stuck. It was about 9" of snow.
