Question repairing paint chips

Hi everyone,

I am noticing some paint chips (hood rash) on both my cars and was wondering the best way to repair them before they get out of hand. BTW, I have a 97' 3.2 TL and 2001 1.7EL.

My plan at this point is to purchase factory paint from Acura but they tell me they have no clear coat in either color (local dealership). I will try a few others in town before proceeding.

Specifically, what is the best ways to sand the area, touch it up with paint, and apply some type of coating as a protectant? Are there any products that anyone can suggest that will aid in the process (i.e. clear coat, tool to sand the area)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

just remember that touch up paint really won't make the chip go away. it's there to fill the chip to stop more chipping/rust/corrosion, etc. make sure you don't put more than one fill per chip. if you do more than that, you'll see it rise and then when you wax, you'll notice them way easy. you wanna just make it so the chips can't be seen unless you're up close. that's the only real way to do it i think unless you want a psuedo paint job. with touch up paint, that's as good as it gets.

For chips, I wouldn't recommend sanding it. If you're not careful, you'll damage the paint on the side and leave an ugly mark.

As dubcnea said, touch up paint is not meant to cover up everything... it's only to touch up minor flaws. Just make sure the area you're painting is clean and take your time and go slow. More importantly, make sure the color matches. I know you're getting it from the factory but still, sometimes it won't match too well.

Oh, and all clearcoat are the same. You can go to your local Walmart and get some in the automotive department.
