Question redlining using 2nd gear & racing

i was behind this 00-01 mazda millenia and I could tell she wanted to race, so I started off with 2nd gear. The light turn green and by the time I knew it, I FORGOT TO SWITCH TO 3rd!!!!! The needle went PAST the redline!! (only for a couple of seconds) then i finally switched it to 3rd. I never in my life ever stayed in the redline for a couple of seconds because I know it's not good for the car. But I wanna know how much damage did I do to the engine?? <--- why is redlining not good for the car?? I let the mazda go cuz I was too worried about the engine.

when shifting from 1st - 2nd - 3rd -4th, do you let off the acceleration and then switch? or do you keep your foot on the pedal the whole time and switch??

Man....I shouldn't even raced her because after the little ordeal, I felt kinda bad for doing it and know that I shouldn't race, but when the adrenaline gets pumping and when your in the moment, it's real hard for me not to RACE people especially in 4-door sedans.

As My32TL pointed out, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Honda has a reputation for making engines that are bulletproof. They'll protect you from yourself. ;-)

Agreed- TL is not a race car

As far as damage - your most likely fine. These engines have safe guards. Not sure what our TL has but other Acura's will shut off fuel injectors when the red line is reached(Integra). You most likely felt the engine start to sputter once the fuel mgmt system safeguards took over.

My '97 3.2 owner's manual says:
"...will enter into the tachometer's red zone. If this occurs, you will feel the engine cut in and out. This is caused by a limiter in the engine's computer controls. THe engine will run normally wen you reduce the RPM below the red zone."
