Unhappy Rack and Pinion

Not too long ago my mechanic pointed out that fluid was leaking from my steering column

The place that i go to for all my engine work does very quality work (shiny AAA awards for customer service at the front desk and all)

They told me that if the fluid continues to leak that my entired rack and pinion will have to be replaced......... on top of the fact that my timing belt is due up for a change AND battery acid ate away at my positive cable

Suggestions people?? One at a time.... all at once..... help me knock this out

I'm a brand new member and my first thread..... i figured the acura heads here could give me more perspective

Timing belt/water pump will cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of 700-1,000 dollars. How many miles do you have on the car?

As for the battery problem, use baking soda to clean the posts and the terminals. If the terminals are too messed up, then get new ones. They cost like 5 bucks.

As for the steering column... beats the hell out of me. I don't know why the rack would have to be replaced if it's just the pinion that seems to be the problem. Why don't you get a second opinion at a different shop?

i'm sitting on 116 thousand right now..... i know i'm due for a timing belt/waterpump job..... it's taken me a while to get the money together for that...... but the issue with the battery cable and the steering fluid leak is my bigger concern cuz i'm worried about how much that's gonna set my money back

i do intend to get a second and third opinion

I would suggest trying a bottle of Lucas PS Stop Leak. If the leak is due to hardened seal, this may soften the seal enough to stop the leak. My father had a 97 Avalon w/ a rack & pinion leak, about a teaspoon or so overnight. After the Lucas PS stop leak, the leak stopped w/i a week and has not returned after 2 yrs.

good luck

Lucas PS Stop Leak is available at most auto parts stores. Call the major chains and check.

good luck
