Power Steering Pump gone..

Hi all,

This being the third cold weather season I've had my 97 3.2, I got the same squealing sound when I turn the steering wheel as I have since I got the thing. I know for some time I've had a slow leak in my PS reservoir, and I've kept it topped up.

Today while driving, the squealing went away, and the wheel became very hard to turn. So I figured my pump was gone for good. Looking at the pump with the car running, I could tell the noise ( not the above mentioned noise, but rather the one that's made my car sound more like big dirty truck) was coming from right around the PS pump. Sooo..I did some looking around at oem sites...and the only one i could find with a pump for my car is an acura dealership. price is 500 bucks.

Has anyone else had experience replacing the PS pump, and if so, how much was the part? Maybe I should bite the bullet and have all the hoses and pulley replaced as well?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Glenn. 97 3.2 340 000kms /211 000mi

seems like I've been putting a lot of money into my car since I've got it. Still works out cheaper than a new car though, i guess. Just when I want to get the intake, or honda inspire parts...something goes wrong=[. someday..

I am not a mechanic but are you sure it isn't the PS belt?

The PS belt would make a squealing noise.

If it's the pump, you should hear something like a bearing is gone. A vibrating/shaking kind of noise...

update:

hey, so it was the p/s pump. My mechanic found a used one in pretty good condition for a hundred bucks. they had to flush the system 3 times since with the amount of shaved metal from the old pump. I guess when i started to notice the noise it was just the worst part before it stopped working...

Anyways, part, labour, honda fluid. 300 cash.

btw, I still cant get over how nice and smooth the engine compartment sounds now. I can barely tell the car is even running from inside the cabin, and sounds like a brand new car when she starts up!

Anyway has anyone changed the power steering fluid just for the heck of it? The manual doesn't say anything about that so I assumed it's good for the lifetime of the car but the baby's getting old and I wonder if some preventive care is necessary.
