Poor Gas Milage

I'm getting shitty gas milage, like 14mpg. Half city and half highway, my tires are at about 32psi and I only use premium fuel. I'm now starting to only get about 200-215 miles per tank. Anyone got any ideas?

yeah TLs are gas pigs and get passed by minivans. I fail to see their attraction anymore.

Is there ethanol in your gasoline? Its been added to ours here in Oregon. The 10% ethanol has killed my gas mileage by over 15%

Next time I go to Canada, let's take care of that!

Ken, I agree with you on the ethanol thing. Certain brands are notorious for ethanol content. Arco and Olympian in SF come to mind. What's shocking is how I've seen a discount gas station (Olympian) packed with cars when a real gas station (Shell) ON THE SAME BLOCK nearly empty. Price difference? 1¢...

...cheaper at Shell.

Try not to. I don't have a choice here in Oregon, its in ALL gasoline sold in the state.

I heard the gas/ethanol mix cause less carbon monoxide emissions. Some bus of the transit system have been using that blend here in Montreal if I remember well.

^ Well, where's the pure gasoline chart? I have a feeling it's not shown because it outperforms those two options.

The slight bump in acceleration for E85 over blended gas is negligible considering the fuel economy loss. It's something that you can attribute to a better launch than anything else. I've ran times almost a second slower at the track just due to excessive wheelspin. Trap speeds were similar but the ET's were completely off.

Oh, and don't get me started on what alternative fuels can do to an older engine. Our parts weren't designed to handle those other fuels and using them will lead to engine/component failure. That's why when I planned out my meth injection system, I used a fuel injector from a FlexFuel car, and not a regular fuel injector, because after a month or two, the regular injector will fall apart.

~Cheers~

You can get real gas on the east side of the state until June. I believe that The Dalles will be in the June deadline. I can't wait until I come out to see my family in August. My TL will just not love that crap at all.

Out of curiosity, would 98 octane be too much and not good for our engines, just like non-premium is?

About gas mileage, I never monitored mine, but I think it's not very optimal.. I unbolted and lifted the small plate* that's on the intake manifold (on the 2.5) to take a look, and it was full of carbon deposit. And the passage that goes to the the EGR valve assembly was 80% clogged.. So I don't know if that component is directly related to gas consumption, but I guess it gives a good idea of the overall condition of the engine. Or at least the condition of the EGR valve, which is supposed to be related. I need a good summer overhaul.

Actually I read on Wikipedia a few days ago about octane ratings. So basically it says that there are 2 systems to measure the octane rating. AKI is usually used here in North America and Europe uses the RON system. Therefore, I presume that in Australia they use RON as well. So basically if 95RON is roughly 91-92AKI, then 98RON should be around 93-94 octane in North America, which is pretty common.

The US uses Ron + Mon / 2 to calculate pump octane ratings. IIRC, here in Japan, the regular gas is 93 or 95 Ron. High octane is, well, higher, haha. From what I've heard, it's about 100 on the R+M/2 scale.

I would NOT use Wikipedia as a credible resource, they have had or have lawsuits going on about their credibility. Basically anyone can put anything on wikipedia, but alot do not because it saves your IP address. As for all the stuff u mentioned Dainius it might be true, but just figured i would let u guys know.

MY 97 3.2tl with 204,000 miles gets about 300-350 mpg on a full tank of regular gas(87)
**until the gas light comes on**I drive hafl highway half city with heat and alil A/c.
When I first got it 2 weeks ago I was getting like 200-250 mpg on a full tank.

all I did was new Iriduim spark plugs, engine flush then new oil, filter, and then I cleaned the intake with some Seafoam. also the throttle body with carb and choke cleaner.

I will post up intructions on how to use the Seafoam as soon as i charge my Camera

yes seafoma nd spark plugs helps a bit but not much. Like 1 Mpg or some thing went from 270 to 320 afer those.. I should try throttle body , Is it a DIy or should i Go see my mec. by the way i drve 80-90 % city and 10-20 % highway.

We have PLENTY of threads about Seafoam. DON'T POST ANOTHER ONE. Cleaning the TB just involves taking off the intake pipe to expose the butterfly and spraying it down with intake cleaner with a rag underneath to catch the excess.

CleanZX10, I hope you know what the 87 is doing to the car, and be thankful for the two knock sensors we have in the intake manifold valley.

~Cheers~

P.S. I don't really care about gas mileage too much because anything was better than either the RR or the SC. Well, maybe except for my friend's Hummer. She gets 9MPG on a good day, haha. H1 FTMFW!

Yea as of recently my gas mileage started to suck.... But this is usually for because it only happens in the winter time for some reason and when it gets hot again I get the normal 20mpg. Now im stuck in like 16 or something. O and I use shell 91, the only gasoline I put in my car.
