NO Spark

I have a 96 2.5 TL . The fuel pump is working, but there is no spark from the coil. I have 12v on the Blk/Yw wire going to the coil. This is the only wire that has voltage. When I unplug the igniter and turn the engine over there is no voltage on any plug terminal. Any ideas?

You have 12V to the distributor and no spark. It's either the coil or the ignitor.

Download the TL shop manual which has the ignition module and coil procedures in detail.

Check coil primary and secondary for resistance; primary 0.36-0.44 ohms (practically a dead short for most VOM's) and secondary 10-8-16.2 kohms. Resistance between No. 3 & 4 terminals on coil should be 2.0-2.3 kohms.

If coil checks OK, then use the Ignition Control Module checks in the manual for that component.

Coil is more likely.

good luck

After pre forming several tests and the information that you supplied...
It appears that the Ignition Control Module is faulty. Is it unusual for the ICM to fail?
Thanks for all the help that you've given thus far!

Coil is more likely. Looking at manual it appears the Ignition Control Module has both coil and ignitor as an assy. It may not be possible to replace coil or ignitor alone.

good luck

Thanks TexasHonda. Using the service manual the Coil, ICM both check out fine. My thoughts now are possibly the (CKS)Crankshaft Position Sensor has failed. The downloaded manual doesn't appear to have any test procedure for the CKS. Is the CKS known to be problematic on the 2.5 engine? Thanks, in advance, for any input you may have.

I've heard of CKP (no CKS that I can find?) failing but never had one fail on me.

You should have Check Engine Light and Obd2 code 0335 or 0336 (obd1 code 4) for a CKP failure.

good luck

You're right, it's CKP. I have no lights or codes. I'm baffled as to why I'm not getting a spark from the coil...

What were the results of your ignition module tests; resistances on terminals 2-3, 2- Secondary Winding Terminal, and terminals 3-4 of connector?

A cracked rotor or distributor cap can short the spark to ground.

Have you checked the camshaft is turning? Look in oil inlet and see if you see valves moving or pull distributor to look at camshaft end for rotation. If no rotation, bad news, a broken timing belt. Not likely but possible.

good luck
