new brake pads do i need shims?
Next weekend im going to put new brake pads on all four wheels. The rear brakes are really squeaking when I apply the brakes, i checked the rear pads and they are covered in rust and pretty thin.
The fronts were actually replaced about 3000 miles ago by the previous owner, but I still wanna replace all 4 at the same time. Im also going to bleed the brakes while I am at it, do I have to use the Honda Dot? Or can I use regular DOT 3 brake fluid?
My other question is, when I order new brake pads, im just going to get the average run of the mill advance auto Wearever silver brake pads. I have them on my rodeo and they are ok.
Do i still need to keep the brake shims or can I just install the brakes without the old shims and just put the brake pads on?
Thanks

If the front pads are only 3000 miles old then it would be a huge waste to replace them unless they prematurely wear out due to wheel alignment problems. Mine was 5000 miles old OEM pads installed by dealer when I got my car from the previous owner and they are still in great shape after my 5 plus years ownership and over 70k driving (80% freeway). One year later I replaced the rear pads with OEM parts (now it's been 4 years and about 50k on them) and they still work and look great.
My suggestion is to stay with OEM and they come with shims (you should not reuse the old shims) and anti-sqeaking grease. It should run you about $60 from dealership or online.
