N D3 shift ?

while driving, is it ok to shift to N and cruise? if so, do i have to press the gas pedal while shifting or is it ok to just shift? also, same question for shifting to D3, can i simply shift or should i be doing something with the gas pedal at the same time?
thanks

You can shift to D3 without letting off the accelerator, if that's what you're asking.

Technically you can shift to Nuetral while cruising. You probably shouldn't be on the gas when you do.

However, you also probably shouldn't shift back into gear if your car is still in motion. I can't really think of a reason why to shift into nuetral in a still moving car (unless your accel pedal was stuck or something).

I'd hate to be your transmission. My neighbore is a tranny mechanic and he said cruising on N is one of the best ways to break the tranny.

Is there really anything to gain or any reason to put it into neutral?

Not really because you can't go all that far before you need to get back on the gas to maintain your speed. A constant acceleration/deceleration cycle is more wasteful than a steady speed.

If you're looking to save gas, there's better ways than this to do it.

Yeah, you will save gas for a couple seconds, but when you have to shift back into drive and up the rpms to get your speed again, you are wasting more gas than by just keeping it in drive.

Want a free way to save gas? Adjust your tire pressure.

Let's say you save 1 gallon of gas for every 200 gallons of gas by drifting in neutral.
the chances of you having to repair your transmission sooner than if you didn't drift in neutral is greater than 1 to 200.

maybe i'm being too statistical here, but drifting in neutral is a bad idea.

haha yeah, good idea. On my old car before my TL (85 buick century) on a long hill i would even shut my car off and drift to "save gas". but that's way back at the age of 16 when i was a car dumbass. haha That was obviously not good for my car.

instead of just saying "dude, its bad for ur car" will somebody please explain why.

My understanding was that if u drop it into neutral on the freeway for example, at 70mph/2500rpms, as long as u rev the engine up to about 2500rpms before dropping it back in D4 you were fine.
