Manual Transmission

Can you swap the manual transmission from a legened v6 into a 98 acura 3.2TL?

why did you buy a TL if you want to do all these things to make it like a legend?

and no, i'm pretty sure they're not interchangable.

^HAHAHAHA! Might work, but the wiring should prove to be difficult. Not worth it, IMO.

i don't think our cars should be manual, honda got it right by not adding that option.

our cars are supposed to be VIP'd out with cool stuff like screens and ps2 and all that fun stuff, too many distractions to have a manual tranny

firewall is nearly the same as well as the engine bay. Im working on that right now. Only downside is i cant find a 6 speed anywhere. Super saught after trans.

Personally i think its a terrible idea they didnt offer a 6 speed version. The automatic transmission is garbage over 40 more whp. You'll burn it up, ive been through 3.

all it would require is a little fabrication, ive done similar stuff many times. Im working on it though, just need some time to do it.

3.2 TL and Legend uses the same engine. Plenty of people on this board have swapped out the headers from the GS (Type II) engine with no problems.

If you have a 2.5 TL, you can get a 5 speed manual from a Vigor. It CAN be done.

If you have a 3.2 TL, you can get a 5 OR 6 speed manual from a Legend. Once again, it CAN be done.

Personally I'd only do such a thing if and when my automatic decided to die on me. Even then, I'll realistically just grab another automatic tranny, there are plenty out there since the 3.2 TL shared the same transmission as the 1st generation RL.

ive never looked into the headders. What kinds are available ? Them shits are hella restrictive. I made different downpipes for mine but if i can ditch the cast garbage id be down. Once the car is a manual then id dip them and get turbo manifolds made

I once found a 5 speed legend tranny on ebay with all of the shift linkage on ebay for 600 bucks. And as for getting a legend, if i would have wanted one i would have bought one but the looks and comfort of the tl suit me much better. I like to drive a manual and that is my only problem with the. And as for the "luxury" of an automatic, many luxury cars are equpped with manual tranmissions. Think how original you would be with a manual 1998 tl. Thanks for the help everyone.

that swap is not for the novice dude. You will need to fabricate a pedal assembly, fabricate a clutch master cylinder and all the hardlines to the clutch slave cylinder. Then you will need to create a jumper harness to convert the obd2 ecu to obd1 so you can run the legend ecu. Then im clueless as to what you could do or as far as the rest of the wiring goes. I think you may need to convert the entire engine harness to the legend stuff. Im pretty sure the tl uses different style coils than the legend. Id have to have both pinouts side by side. But anything like ckyp sensor, iac, egr, all that shit could be different. Its not as easy as just bolting it in there and going.

Id also assume the rear trans bracket will need to be used from the legend, not to mention the flywheel, and all that other stuff.

The transmission is a large part of the conversion and difficult to find, however its about 1/5 of the shit you need to do it. The pedal assy and the rest of the shit is where the time comes into play. Its not a weekend job either.

But like i said id say its no harder than bodydropping a truck or tubbing a hot rod out. It just takes some time and patiience.

My main interest in doing it is so i can build turbo manifolds and turbocharge the car without having some weak transmission

Skunk2 has that taken care of for about $130 with a pre-made OBDII->I converter harness.

^ I had considered it before my engine blew because i wanted to run a Legend ECU to take care of some tuning issues. Although there are ways to tune using our OBDII ECUs, but the cost is one of the biggest drawbacks. Even using the Legend ECU wouldn't be the cheapest, but it's significantly cheaper than trying to do it with ours.

~Cheers~

mines modified.

So you are telling me skunk 2 makes a jumper harness for the acura tl?

The ones they made as far as i knew were for 4 cyl cars. Meaning theres only injector wiring for 4 injectors.

Ken, you have your car converted to obd1?

I'm feeling you on wanting to change your TL to Manual transmission. I too like driving manual transmission more than automatic and wished the TL came with the manual option. That's my only gripe about my 3.2 but I have a vigor (manual transmission) that i drive in the winter months so I don't miss it that much.

And just think about how many people wouldn't care. a 10-year old entry-level luxury car with 15-inch rims. We have nice cars, but they're not flashy at all. it's an Acura Accord basically.

if you want a manual transmission, save your money and buy another car or a motorcycle. it's just not worth it on our cars.

everyones got their own oppinion.

Ive already parted out a 450+whp sub 1500lb car, and a 250whp road race car for what ive got. And all you get with a motorcycle is a 10k dollar paperweight 7 months of the year where i live.

10 year old entry level luxury car? As long as you are happy with your own car, who cares. All that statement brings to my mind is some rapper video with gangbangers driving around with the window sticker still on their phantoms

. Price and age has nothing to do with a great car and the choice to modify. We live in a different era now adays. My dads cars as a kid are classics now. When im 40 whos to say a fully restored built up 30 year old dank ass looking tl wouldnt attract the same attention. Besides, as long as its tasteful it will never be outlived by a bunch of tasteless new cars with 30 inch wheels and funkmaster flex paintjobs. Id just as soon build a near 20 year old ls400 with a junction produce kit then get a new one. Thats just me though, i build cars.

I feel you on that one, I love the looks of the first gen tl and it looks great with a set of 17 inch rims and a nice grill with tinted windows. I get comments on my tl all of the time by people who think its a lexus(badges removed) and people are blown away that its a 98, many people think its at least a 2000. Which brings me to another point, the first gen tl is kinda uncommon and you dont see it everyday like you do a civic or cobalt. I have a japanese friend who is going to get the saber bodykit from japan this summer and my tl will be completely custom for the united states. I love my car and would almost rather have it than a new beamer.
