I was measuring up my stock 3.2TL muffler to order a high-flow Magnaflow one and noticed a plate about 3" square bolted on the top of the muffler. Does anyone know what this is?

I was thinking of taking the plate off to see what was underneath it. It may be possible to remove some baffles and if so, this would be a cheap way of increasing the flow through the muffler and not having to buy a new high-flow one

Has anyone looked at this?

 

i'm guessing the plate's there for heat purposes. the exhaust gets really hot and the plate might be near the gas tank. just a guess.

 

There is a heat shield above the muffler. This plate is bolted to the top of the muffler and a bit to right. You can see it when you look up at the muffler from the passenger side of the car. It also has a gasket between the plate and the muffler.

I'll take if off tomorrow and have a look.

 

haha i would take a look but it's been three or four years since i've even seen my stock exhaust. i think i'ts somewhere in LA. hehe too bad i'm 400 miles away.

 

So, what is underneat the plate?
