How do you take off that tricky Honda oil filter?

I just got a 97 2.5 tl this summer and its time to change the oil. The guy who had it before me got it serviced at an Acura Dealer and so the oil filter is Honda. I m having a hard time finding the right wrench to take it off, and not to mention the spot to take it out is pretty confined.

So if anyone has any advice or suggestions on what tool to use, and how to do it, please reply.
THANKS

Lightbulb Changing the Oil Filter....

Ji,
I change my own oil every 3-4500 miles. It is a more tougher one to remove. I ahve not found a wrench that will work good. I simply make sure the car is stone cold. (i start it for just a minute or so) and use my bare hands to remove it.

Oil filters are made to only be torqued lightly. Simply tighten by hand until it stops and then give it 1/2-3/4 revolution. IF you have any trouble removing it, try using a pair of rubber gloves (like the ones used to clean a toilet or something).

Good luck!

hey guys,

I change my oil religiously every 3000 miles and I use a Honda Oil Filter wrench adapter. All Honda oil filters are the same size, so this is universal for any of your cars. They are only about $15 at the dealer and they use a 14mm socket (I think). I use the extender and a socket wrench to remove the filter. Now I have the whole procedure down to a science where it takes me less than 10 min to do the whole thing!

FYI ... Honda has gone to a new oil filter size, it is much smaller, and my current oil filter wrench does not fit. So, I have been searching the internet for an oil filter wrench for the new '15400-PLM-A02' oil filter. I also went to my local Auto Zone, and the smallest oil filter wrench was still not small enough. I will keep looking around and when I find one, I will let you guys know.

well i sure love fram's grip oil filters. haha

well what i did to take off the honda filter was i'd take a rag and wrap it around and just twist with all you got.

in the 2.5TL engine, it's in the wierdest position to even use a tool.

I found a 'cup type' oil filter wrench for the new Honda 'A02' oil filter at my local 'Advance Auto Parts' store for $5.99! It is manufactured by 'AMPRO Tools Corporation'. The part number is 'T70413'. It is 65mm and has 14 flutes. Now this is generic and not a Honda oil filter wrench, but I brought the 'A02' filter into the store with me, tried it, and it fit like a glove.
