Post How big of a job to replace the oil pan (96 acura TL 2.5)

How big of a job to replace the oil pan (96 acura TL 2.5)? Does it take 4 hours, 8 hours ..... for a standard "home garage mech?

I started to take some bolts out, but the tranny seems to be blocking some bolts (maybe not, just can't tell). Also there is a cross bar (frame) that may make it difficult, too. Debating if I should continue or let a pro handle it ..

Thanks,

Labviking

actually somebody before me had stripped the original threads, so I had a shop go 1 size bigger. The mech didn't think the one size bigger plug would last long, since it is aluminum. It has been leaking for awhile now, getting tired of the little oil puddles.

Dealership said a new oil pan is $475 .... So I was going to have a welder redo the drain plug for about $50, but he wants the pan off to do it.

Little worried about the heil-coil method.

After talking to Acura, they made it sound that with the aluminum oil pan, that this type of problem is common (especially if you bring the vehicle to quick oil lube places. Also, read somewhere on the Internet that the engines out last the oil pans ....

The Acura service person said the labor is about 6.5 hours. Problem is that there is a large support bar that needs to come off to get the pan off and some odd angled bolts.

Guess I'm going to try it myself and have a welder put new threads in.

Cheers!

Use one of these Oil drain valve, use some type of gasket sealant than screw it in to seal properly.

This is what happened to me. Some monkey at Texaco Express Lube screwed the bolt back in to the oil pan too tightly and cracked it. This was about 6 years ago, but it still ticks me off to think about it. That thing is a monster to get off and I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. The cheapest quote I got to do it was $1,000.00 from an independent shop. The dealerships all wanted 1200-1500 to do it and either 2 or 3 days. I decided to heck with it and just dealt with it. I was losing about a quart every two weeks. Now that the car is gone, I have a serious mess to paint over in my garage floor. If you get it done, Like Kam said, please post a DIY on it. I would love to see how that gets done. Good Luck!
