High powered Alternator upgrade?
HI folks.
My alternator is starting to make a whining sound now. I let my car idled for 30 minutes with nothing turned on, and then checked the battery with a digital meter. Its lowered than normal. I dont wont to end up stranded in some wooded road one day at night time and tow my car home.
How do this alternator deal work. I mean, the 2.5 alternator's max output is 100 Amp. Suppose I got a new alternator that can generate 150 Amp, can I use that instead? Can I use one that are rated hign in amperage than the stock ones?
Also are there any benefits in going higher? Any risk of damaging internal parts? ANd finally, what aftermarket alternators does everyone use and place you bought them.
Thanks in advance..

Your best bet is to stick with an OEM alternator... unless your running A LOT of electronic mods, all you need is a simple remanufactured alternator from a parts store.... Your looking at anywhere from100-300 bucks for a a reman... Expect to shell out another 50-150 for the core, but you will get that back when u return your old alternator... In my experiences (working at NAPA for 3 yrs).. A higher amp alt cannot hurt your system... Its putting a lower amp alt on that will give you problems. Simply put: buy a reman with a lifetime warranty and dont ever worry about it again!!
