HIDs.... what's the big deal?

My co-worker has a new TL which comes standard with HIDs.

He doesn't see any difference than when he drives a rented toyota camry with regular lights.

Why would he be driving in a rented car?

His HIDs have been stolen twice in 4 months and costs his insurance about $3,500 to replace them. He's so pissed off about the light issue that he's considering terminating his lease early even though he loves his car.

Well new TLs come standard with HIDs, our TLs dont. So if we upgrade to HID nobody will know unless they see them on. If your co-worker sees no difference between HIDs and Halogens, tell him to get some glasses fast because if his vision is that bad, he must be a road hazard. My car is about 3x brighter with my HID kit than with the standard Halogens.

High Intensity Discharge. everything you need comes in the kit. basically it's plug and play.

For the price of HID's; are they really that much better than a good set of halogens. I have been considering getting a set for my car, but i want to know that I am getting what I paied for. I had an S-class ridding my a$$ last night, and i did notice that they were brighter than my xenon halogens. Those who have HID,s, tell give me your honest opinion. Thanks

i dont have hid's on my car but ive been in a few cars with them and i noticed the type and quality of the light ... on my halogens it is distant but it fades... on the hid's the light is very consistant and it on the edges it is a purpleish glow but on the road it is just an extrem white ... in spring i am hoping to get them and i think that StreetEffectz has the best deal going right now which is the 6000K kit (most output ) for our headlights for which is 550 shipped which is veery reasonable.

I was also wondering if the audi's, bmw's, or 2nd gen's that come with them standard use a different style of headlight housing as the hologen bulb housings. They always look very condinsed. I was just wondering if this is a characteristic of the hid filament bulb or caused by the housing.

HID's are much much better than regular halogens. if someone could not tell the difference between the two, he/she is on drug.
HID are not really much brighter than conventional halogens, but because of different light spectrum and more focus lighting, they appear much brighter. if you are planning to keep your car for several years, i say the extra money is definitely worth it. having compared my s2000, 2000 TL and 96 TL side by side, i have to say the stock 96 TL lighting appears ****ty. HID may not make driving safer, but they should make driving much more enjoyable.

HIDs are incredible and are worth every penny! I love mine so much I got the foglights too. You cant even compare them to Halogens. Also, besides the fact that you can see the road MUCH better, it changes the whole look of the car's front end. If you're gonna get a kit though, definetly go with a 6000K kit. I have them and I make ANY OEM HID look yellow. I mean every car I've been side to side with so far has had yellow HIDs compared to mine. I used to think BMWs were so purple until a short time ago. You can see the pic in my sig.

there are also the two different types of bulbs, like the d2s, and d2r. (something like that) What's the difference between the two?

A D2R bulb has a metal stripe on it that prevents glare. Neither of these bulbs apply to your car though. Thats only for factory HID. You need a H4 Conversion Kit.

I haven’t seen the 8000K bulbs yet but I’m assuming it should be a dramatic difference. From stock 4300K to 6000K is a HUGE difference. I would be a little worried that the 8000K bulbs
would look kind of like Hyper White bulbs but I’m not too sure since I haven’t seen them YET. They're pricey too. I think $400 per pair? Something like that.

When you buy a HID kit you need to know what type of bulbs you have so you get the correct beam pattern. They make kits for every type of bulbs except H3. Our cars use H4.

Unfortunately you cant do anything. If you want HIDs that bad you have to deal with not having highbeams. Its not that bad and doesn’t bother me at all. The ONLY HID kit I’ve seen that still
has highbeams is made by BellOff and costs $1100.
