Aftermarket tweeters
Installing aftermarket tweeters is an excellent idea.
however, on our TLs, the tweeter is located in a very sketchy location.
If you replace the tweeters in the stock location, the imaging will be really off.
component speakers sound best when the tweeter is close to the midrange.
some aftermarket tweeters have surface mounting kits that you can just stick to a body panel and run the wires underneath.
Putting the tweeters, say, on the black surface where the door frame meets the body (on the front edge of the door) (right by the window) would be a better place. I placed mine further down on my door, about a foot away from the door speaker. The guy at my car audio shop told me it was a good idea to keep the tweeter close to the midrange, and that reflecting off the glass (dash location) colors the sound alot, which doesn't sound as good.
just my two cents. It's good to see that people are adding component sets to their TLs. good luck with the project.

i actually decided against doing a component system. im going to keep the factory tweets and ive got a pair of polk db650's on the waywe'll see how they sound. im not against adding new tweeters.

if you replace the deck, 1 pair of tweeters will not work (the ones on the ceiling). If you want crisp clean sound, id suggest going through with buying a component set. You can place the crossovers inside the doors but tape it down so it won't slide around.

^^^yup... had to modify the baffle so it would fit... nothing that a dremel didn't take care of in 5 mins... i will eventually put in a waterproof foam baffle instead and modify my own holes... i don't really like that plastic design... but it has been 3 yrs.. been so lazy...

the ceiling midranges won't work with just an aftermarket CD PLayer.
i use an older Alpine amp to power the ceiling midranges. it definitely raises the soundstage a lot, i'd recommend it. i just tucked the amp under my front passenger seat. the dash tweeters always work with an aftermarket Head Unit.
if you use an amp to power the midranges up on the ceilings, i'm pretty sure you don't need a High-Pass crossover. I power mine full range on the amp, and it sounds just fine. I'm sure there's a crossover up by the midranges.
