Factory Alarm

I got a 97 3.2 and recently bought a remote for the keyless entry. When I lock the doors, the alarm light goes on to show that it's active. But I tried leaving the window down and reaching in to unlock the door while the alarm was on but nothing happened. Is there something else I need to do to activate the alarm? I feel like I just have a light to show that I got an alarm but nothing to protect the car. Please help if you can

Derrick

Are you waiting for the alarm to arm itself before unlocking the door? If you notice it blinks long and slow in the beginning, then it blinks short and fast. It takes about 15 seconds for the alarm to arm. Once it blinks fast, unlock the door.

Those factory alarms are crappy. mine does similar things. When i try to open the front doors when its activated nothing happens. Then i tried opening the back and it went off. If you reset the battery, it should do the job, but your better off with another alarm system.
