Exhaust leak killing milage?

Well, when I first got the car I got the exhaust manifold replaced for free (from a shitty dealership ) and they told me a piece of flex coupling had been installed and was allowing a small amount of exhaust to leak. I never worreid about it, but the other day I was dropping someone off after work and he mentioned it when he opened the door to get it, it sounds pretty bad now. I'll try and get a video of it with some sound. It definately goes with engine speed too.

My milage has been pretty far down too, I've been driving a bit more aggresively, but not enough to lose as much milage as I have been. Could the exhaust leak lead to improper backpressure, leading to problems with the actual combustion?

I'm guessing the "aftermarket flex coupling" goes from the manifold to the exhaust piping, connecting them? Is it somethign that a small local place could easily install for me (I would assume well less than $100, like $50 or so)?

i'm not sure of this particular situation, but loss of backpressure can lead to loss of hp, no matter where it's leaking from. so whether your muffler is crap, or you have a leak in your flex, it could rob you of hp and mpg (which i'm now figuring out for this car is not that good, even though it's a 5 cyl).

Not that good milage? What are you getting, and what were you expecting? It seems like it should be at least 22/27 if everything is in order, pretty good for a 2.5L I5 I suppose, I didn't expect more. I'm just glad its not like my dad's truck (13mpg), and its about the same as my moms car (2000 Toyota Solara SLE V6 [3L I think]).

Anyone else, something a small shop could easily fix?

That is horrible, like, something horribly wrong horrible. You should get that in the city, and then closer to 30 on the highway. You aren't driving around in D3 with no oil are you?

Holy crap guys. I get 7.2L/100km (32.6MPG) on the highway consistently. I also get at best in the summer 10.2L/100km ( in the city 23MPG) or 11.7L/100km (20MPG) if I drive agressively. In the winter I get more like 12.5L/100km (18.8MPG) or sometimes as bad as 14L/100km (16.8MPG). That was the worst I ever got.

EDIT: My car is a '96 2.5TL with 185 500km on it (115 938mi).

I was getting numbers like that, low 20's around town, to almost 30 on the highway/slightly mixed (chilling on the highway at 80-90 most of the time).

My car is going to a local guy tomorrow, so he can hopefulyl fix the exhaust leak this weak, and replace whatever seal it is that is leaking oil on my garage floor. My dad thinks its the valve cover gasket, thats what it was on his truck. I'm not getting any smoke, just drops of oil on the floor.

I get to drive my mom's car this week since she is in florida w00t!

lol, no. i have oil and drive in D4. i'm attributing it to letting it warm up and such. other than that, i have no idea why it would be getting bad mpg. it just got new plugs and wires from acura. unsure.

I consistently get around 17 MPH in city. I hope it's because of winter. We'll see when it gets warmer.

I got a leak on mine too. Loud as a tractor...but I kinda enjoy it and I don't wanna fix it. Combine that with my cold air....my car is pretty frickin loud..specialy at high rpms...

As far as mpg goes..ever since i got my car I've been doin around 12-15 mpg...stop and go LA traffic ..plus I don't like it when people drive faster than me so I hit high rpms often.

i got 21.5 mpg with my car full of luggage i should add. I'm sure the extra weight accounted for my low mpg.
