Engine Rebuild
Ok so i was at the dealer the other day and one of the techs hits me with some bad news...he says "this car is gettin old...id get rid of it within the next 2000 miles". Which really sux cuz Im 2 payments away from it being mine. So im gonna do what any man that loves his car would do, keep it and get the engine rebuilt and new tranny. My question to you guys is how much does it cost to rebuild a 2.5TL engine? Does anyone have any idea a price range maybe? Any help would be coo. THNX in advance.

I don't think I would rely on the word of one of the techs unless he did an extensive evaluation of your engine. What proof of near engine failure does he have to make such a statement?

Yeah, If you are gonna do a rebuild and spend the money dude, I would wait until it dies. HONESTLY> DOn't just re-build it for the sake of it. I would get a second opinion, and if they say the same then just let it die and worst case, get another used engine and rebuild that if your old one then becomes un-fixable. Not gonna be a cheap project either way though dude.

If you have any info as to why the tech told you this it would help out...As for rebuilding it just because,it could get costly and not be required....Question the tech as to how he knows your engine is on it's last legs..ie.. did he preform a leak down test, compression test, sent an oil sample to be examined, was there coolant in the oil, were the plugs fouled with oil deposits???? Ask questions and you will get answers...

Ill bet he was just talking shit. People say stupid stuff all the time, trying to sound like know it alls. I mean how in the hell would he be able to qualify the life expectancey of your car to 2000 more miles. These cars are built to last. I dont think he means rebuild it right away, I think hes just getting a general idea for when the time comes when he will do that.

well im at like 150K...and she has been leaking oil for about a month now i just havent had any money to get it fixed...and the guy said that the i was gonna need a new oil pan and that the oil pan alone cost about a grand or more. Also he said that the gaskets and all that might be blown and that is also about a grand so i just figured screw it ill just rebuild that engine...do a mild bore and call it a day...
like i said before the car is almost paid off and i been thinking about taking out a small loan from my bank to get it in tip top condition. from top to bottom engine paint rims body kit the whole nine. But i just really want the car to last at least till i graduate in a few years.

I dunno about a grand, but I can definately see the oil pan costing a lot!! HAve you guys ever seen the oil pan on the C32???? The axles go through it!! It's a pretty wierd setup. So yeah, in that regard IF it does need an oil pan, it could cost quite a bit to fix. and if you have to pull out the motor to do all that crap anyways, a re-build might not be a bad idea....BUT STILL I would do as my good friend DRH says and ask a tonne of questions and maybe still take it to a second mechanic. (and I trust him, he's the one doing my car right now!!!) DRH....there's better be an empty spot inside for my car by sat afternoon!!! :P

I would like to hear more feedback too since my 96 2.5TL has been burning off some oil lately. I use full synthetic, and just switched back to a synthetic blend and added some lucas oil to see if that helps. What options far as performance would be available for a rebuild? rebuilt head with P&P, mill the head, or oversize pistons? thanks i would like to know also.

As for performance rebuilds start with an RL block,Type II heads ported and polished...as for milling the heads I think the most you are going to want to take off is .030 before you run into timing belt issues....Maybe look into regrinding your cams, not sure what valve springs you would use to prevent valve float...

So i clicked on one of the links on the forum that said something about rebuilt acura engines and it turnes out its a place right here in houston. So i called em up and they said they dont have any in stock that they would have to rebuild mine. The guy said that it would take about 3 days and that it would cost about 1500. What you guys think about that price is that a good deal? And what all does a "rebuild" consist of what do they do? Sorry for all the questions, just wann know what im gettin into.
