EGR VALVE CLEANING/ O2 Sensor
Egr Valve Cleaning
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can anyone direct me or help me with detailed instructions on cleaning the EGR Valve on a 1996 Acura TL.
I don't know very much about the car, I have a jeep cj. So any help is appreciated with locations of all the components.
Thanks
ALso does anyone have a diagram of where the different O2 sensors are located?

Yea I am gettting the check engine light with a EGR code and O2 sensor,
sensor 1 bank 2 or vice versa, I have to go back and look, still need to know which one is which.

Post codes and I'll try to help. Some codes such as "insufficient EGR flow" don't necessarily mean the EGR is blocked, but may indicate the EGR distribution manifold is blocked. O2 sensors are similar. Some can indicate faulty sensors, and others indicate possible fuel delivery problems or air metering problems.
good luck

Ok,
WIll Do, I have to go out of town, but will get the actual codes when I return.
I had the local Radio shack pull the codes for me, showed some type of EGR code, and those baby's are quite expensive. I wanted to try the cleaning of the EGR route first.
Just some off the research on this forum, that seemed to be the first option.
Thanks

Do you live in the US? Have under 150,000 miles?
If so, you can get your sensors replaced for free. Its part of an EPA mandated warranty.

yup.. just got mine done this week due to engine light going on. With the replacement I also got free spark plugs, ignition coils, oil change, oil filter and a free car wash (that was real cool)
You can call the dealer and have them run your vin. just make sure they dont offer you some other BS as they will try and say its not that or some other BS.
Good Luck

We tried to have the deal fix it, with the recall.
We had 151,430 miles at that time and they would not complete the repair.
THe were complete a- holes.
I got my codes if anyone can help.
1. P0141 - 02 Sensor - Bank 1 Sensor 2
2. P0401 - EGR Insuficient Flow
Thanks

P0141 means the heater circuit on the O2 sensor aft of the catalytic converter is likely out. It could mean wiring, connector, or ECU problem but most likely the heater element simply burnt out. If you check the correct wires w/ VOM you should measure open circuit (infinite resistance). A new O2 sensor is necessary. Check ebay for best deals.
P0401 is insufficient EGR flow. This most likely means the EGR manifold ports are partially or completely blocked, or EGR valve is blocked. The valve is working electrically, but low or no flow is being detected.
good luck

If there is another dealership around your area.. try going to another one. They might be able to help you out. Some of them dont know. Is the limit 150k miles??? I am not sure about that one, mine had 124k.

So Texas Honda,
Can I clean the EGR Valve?
Or just replace it?
Will a chiltons manual explain the process to replace the o2 sensor and the EGR Valve?
Thanks for the info.

Also,
Bank 1 Sensor 2 - This is not the sensor in the engine compartment right?
This is the sensor close to the c. converter?
what is the general location of the EGR Vavle?

In my experience, I've never seen a blocked EGR. It's always the EGR passages or the EGR manifold. If you bridge a vacuum line directly from TB vacuum source to the EGR and it causes a stumble or engine speed increase, you know the EGR is opening.
The design of the valve makes it very difficult to clean mechanically. You can only spray throttle body cleaner and blow air through the EGR. The EGR manifold and passages can be disassembled and cleaned.
Not familiar w/ Chiltons manuals. Haynes generally covers this so Chilton's probably does also.
Bank 1, Sensor 2 is the sensor behind the catalytic converter.
EGR valve is usually on back side of engine mounted behind the intake manifold. Your Chiltons should have this location.
good luck

You have to un-bolt the cat from the Y-Pipe and angle it down. Support the cat with a stand so you don't bend your piping. Un-bolt the shield for the wiring as well so you have some working length.

ok,
I am un bolting the front of the cat?
The bolts have springs on cat side right?
How far can I drop it down?
I am working off of ramps and a floor jack!
THanks

ok, WTF. Why is the Stealer tellin me, the only thing warrantied after 50,000 miles on my 2003tls is the tranny. They tell me the only year that extended the warranty, to 80,000 on the egr valve is the 99tl. So are they feeding me a line of bull shit. When you say the epa mandates that they warranty to 150,000 are you talking about the egr valve? I have my car @ the Stealer as we speak, with my VSA & engine light on, the guy told me, minimum of $99.00 to look @ my car. If you could can someome respond fast, Picking up my car tomorrow. Thanks in Advance

BTW, started my repair by cleaning the EGR and what I could in the crossover. Helped at first, and then, believe it or not, got worse. That is when a trip to a friends friend at the dealer was made...
