Blinkers...
Blinkers...
I've been thinking lately of switching all my bulbs back to amber. Corners, parking, front & rear blinkers. What do you guys think? I'm really getting bored of superwhites and I especially hate the way they look green when compared to the HID's. Should I do it or will it look ugly?

Ok. So should I put clear bulbs or amber bulbs? These superwhites just have to go. I think if you have superwhite headlights than superwhite corners compliment them nicely. With HIDs though, they just don't match.
I broke and ordered LEDs. They’re amber so they’re legal color. I think I found a solution to make the light more widespread. I found these small reflectors that slide over the leds. I already know how to stop the hyper blinking. I’ll let you guys know how it turns out. I got 2 pairs of 3156's for the front and rear (easily modified for 7440) and 3 pairs of 194's. Heres the sites.

I got a ticket Sunday morning for having blue lights in my corners. They said they would have given me a ticket for the non-amber blinkers, but they went easy. I came to the board today to try and find out how to by amber LED's! There's no way I'm putting the ugly orange reflectors back on my car! I'm looking for nice superbright yellow LED blinkers, and hopefully White LED's for my 4 corners...
96tl- let me know about the hyper-blinking. I'll need that soon, too!

I had them sent 2 day Fedex so i'll have them tomorrow. I need to go to Autozone and pick up a variable load flasher next. I'll let you know if they're worth buying.
By the way, you need to order 3157 bulbs. The only difference is that there are 2 little plastic prongs that need to be sanded off. Easy. I’ll let you know about that also. The only site I’ve seen actual 7440 LED blinkers is www.autodynamic.com and they’re out of stock.
Thanks!!! BTW- did you get the Hyper Ambers or the Super Ambers. I think I'm going to go with the Supers, since the description of the Hypers is "BLINDING". The cop said he'd give me a ticket for my white blinkers next time he pulled me over, so I don't want to take any chances. If the supers come and they aren't bright enough, I'll put them in my tails. I still have the yellow cover in my fogs, so I want the blinkers to match that.
I'm also getting 2 pairs of white 194's for my 4 front corners.
I'm only ordering for the front of my car for now- to see how I like the lights. i'm going to have to have them shipped on FedEx, too, b/c the cop sits in the same place every saturday night, and it's on my way home! (bastard).
Finally- I think I'm going to pick up 2 of JamStraight's Aluminum Power Resistors (is this the same as the Variable Load Flashers you mention?) - they're only $8 each...
Thanks again for the info!

The power resistors work differently. You need to put one before each blinker bulb to stop the hyper flashing. It'll work pretty much the same way as the variable load flasher. But if you need to buy 4 of those (front and rear) its gonna cost you $30 when the new flasher is only $9.99 and Autozone.
BTW, don't let the cop be the only reason you're changing you're bulbs. Superwhite is getting played out. LEDs are in right now. Lets just hope the light spreads okay. I know the front should be good. The rear I dont know.
Cool, thanks...
DirectAuto said they don't have stock in the parts I wanted to order.
Anyway- I price-shopped around, and I think I can get the 3157's for $10 each and the 194's for $15 each. I definitely think the VLF at autozone is a good idea!
Thanks again!

Well I just talked to some guy at Autozone and he told me the flasher is electronic, but he doesn’t know what variable load means. So basically he’s not sure if it’ll help me slow down the blinkers. I’m gonna keep researching.
The only similar thing I could find anywhere was at http://www.autoi.com/
The description only lists american cars, though.
The direct link is:

but I don't know if it'll work that way- you may have to browse. $25, too... :P
Anyway- i'm excited to get the bulbs!

Just got all the bulbs today! They look so nice and well made! No cheap junk! I’ll have pics later on tonight. I’m so0o0o0o excited!

BTW, someone in “Audio & Electronics” told me if you have LEDs in the front and rear, it wont shouldn’t hyper flash because the load is equal all around. I’ll test this theory tonight and let you know.

Aw- lucky! POST PICS!!! Everyone's sold out, so I'll have to wait until next week! You must've got the last set from DirectAuto.
I shopped around and finally found them at http://www.myroadster.com for the best price I found (though DirectAuto wouldn't give me a quote). I ordered 2 equalizers anyways- I'm leaving my rear flashers stock until I see how the front ones look.
POST PICS!!!
BTW- I went with the HyperAmbers; Jerry @ MyRoadster said there wasn't a HUGE difference, and that the cops shouldn't care... We'll see.
BTW- did I mention- POST PICS!!!

Okay, I had some problems.
1 - Be extremely careful with the 194 LEDs when installing them in the parking lights. They don’t stay in tight so when I was putting it into the headlight, it came out and fell inside. I had to take off the bumper cover, bumper, and headlight to get it out. Good thing is I managed to fix the gap between the headlights and bumper. I put a drop of hot glue on the bulb so it won’t happen again. This also happened with the bottom corner light. Be very careful.
2 - The LED blinkers will appear dim until you swap all the bulbs with LEDs. I guess the halogens take too much power away. Weird. That drove me nuts for like a ½ hour trying to figure out. So don’t worry about it until you swap all 4. They really are blinding to look at. I was seeing spots.
3 - You need to sand the 3157 bulbs with a metal file and hot glue them to make them stay in the back. The fronts you could sand however much you want and they still don’t fit right. I had to trim some plastic off the 7440 plug and add some hot glue.
4 - This is really bad. The bulbs don’t fit in the tails. I’m gonna have to modify the bulbs.
5 - After installing all the bulbs (with the tailight bulbs hanging in the trunk), these are the results. With hazards they all hyper flash. Right blinker only works, but again they hyper flash. Left blinker only doesn’t work period. If I unplug 1 LED and put a normal bulb, they hyper flash. WTF? This is gonna take some work to figure out.
Overall the LEDs are very bright. Definitely bright enough to be seen day or night. Tonight I’m gonna pick up that flasher from Autozone and see what happens. I’m also gonna try to fit the bulbs in the tails somehow. Oh, I forgot to mention, I dropped a bulb when trying to put it in the tailight and I can’t find it anymore. I might have to take the whole stereo out to get it.
I had a REALLY bad night and will tonight again most likely.

Blinkers are all working. The reason one side wouldn’t work was because I put blue LEDs in the blinkers inside the cluster. Somehow these were interfering with the flasher. I just swapped them out with regular bulbs and they work perfect now.
The 194 LEDs are now all hot glued in place and nice and tight. The best thing about how glue is that its pretty strong, but can be easily removed.
The rear blinkers were a b!tch. I grinded them down with a grinder. I even had to grind the sides of the LEDs a bit. They still work as long as you don’t go too deep. Then I had to widen the holes in my tails a little bit with a soldering iron. The plug still snaps in place perfectly. I also had to add some hot glue on those bulbs to make them stay in the plug. After all that I still had to wiggle the bulbs in place. I didn’t want to widen the tails too much and ruin them. I recommend how gluing them so they don’t fall out of the plugs and roll around the in the tailights.
Thats about it. Now they all blink perfectly except for the hyper flashing. They’re bright as hell guys. They don’t look like little dots like people say. That must be what happens when you buy cheap @ss LEDs. If you look directly into the blinker you get blinded. I didn’t even buy the brightest ones which are Hyper Amber, I bought Super Amber. I kind of wish I did buy the Hyper Ambers instead, but these are still VERY bright. I will take some pics for you. I had no time last night.
BTW, our cars already have Variable Load Flashers. The LEDs still hyper blink. Now there are 3 solutions. Either buy 4 Load Equalizers that Jam Strait makes which are just resistors for $6.74 each. Buy 4 50 watt 6 ohm resistors and add one to each bulb. Or buy an adjustable flasher from a company in Canada called Libertek. The website is www.libertek.com. It cost $35 and the blinker rate can be set from 1 to 6 flashes per second.
I just wanted to let you guys know I fixed the hyper blinking by modifying the stock flasher unit. It's very easy as long as you have some soldering skills. All you need is to go to Radio Shack and pick up a 1 Mega Ohm Linear Potentiometer for $2.49 and slap it into the stock flasher. Go to this site for reference.

i think you should put the amber in the bumper lights......but thats just my preferance...i like the jdm look, black headlights, oem lip, and aclears with amber bulbs, i know thqt is not jdm but it looks kinda like the jdm bumper lights
So- I did some investigation... The cops out and out lied to me! They told me I needed to have Amber bulbs in my front blinkers. I checked the Motor Vehicle Act, and it says they can be any color between white and amber! They also told me no sidemarkers, no lighted licesnse plate rings and no lights on the hood (don't worry- I don't have any of those)- and guess what???? The act says nothing about these! The only thing the act says is that you can't have blue lights on the car.
Fvckers! They're definitely getting an earful in court. My suggestion to everyone... research the law, maybe print it out and keep a copy by your 'license and registration'
