I know this is a bad way to start with my first post but I don't know what to do. I have a 98 3.2 TL with 173K miles and I just had it towed to a service station because I was stuck on the highway last night because of a trany problem. I was crusing along and then it sounded like I hit something and I heard a whinning noise. I had to glide over to the shoulder. Once stopped the car would not move in any gear and trany fluid was leaking out. The whinning noise would just get louder as I tried to put it in any gear. The car ran well before and was my DD. It is 100% stock and in good shape other then the trany. I'm waiting for the shop to call me with the bad news but fear the worst. I thought I would post here and see if there was any interest in the car and ask for advise.

I'd just pick up a new tranny and/or torque converter. No matter how you slice it, it's still cheaper than buying a new car, and you won't get anything for it if the tranny is blown as badly as you're describing it.

I just got my tranny today from the junkyard. Paid $500 not bad.

My tranny was making a whinning sound to and leaking a little. You need a replacement.

I had 210,000mi

replacement has 90,000mi

id hope it works. 90-120k are when most of them go out. Especially when you dunk new fluid in them if someones been runnin the same shit in there for 90k miles.

Ive put 2 in my car and had them go out within a month. Shit sucks weiners doing all that labor and its fucked up again within no time

Update. The shop called me and said for $1,400 they would put in a used one with a 6 month warranty. What do you think? Other then this the car has never been a problem which is good and bad as all the other parts have 173K miles on them as well. The interior is in great shape and the body is clean. I may need tires before the winter.

the warranty isnt very long.. my used engine has 2 year unlimited.. and it wasnt alot more.$$

im surprised you can get a warranty at all on a used trans.

1000-1500 is the going rate. Hell ive paid 1200 for a ua3 3.2 trans alone. Granted it was because it had low mileage.

750 for labor
700 for trans

I just picked up the car. Total bill $1,722. This included towing and a 4 wheel alignment as they had to take out the rack. The used trans had 97,000 miles on it. They found broken teeth inside when they opened her up.
