It's actually pretty easy and cheap to make. The hardest part is you need to take apart your headlights so it's only worth it if you're doing it at the same time you're smoking your headlights. Here's a how-to:

The bimmers pretty much do it the same way. If you get a chance to go to the dealer, go look at their headlight rings carefully and you'll see the notches behind the rings, and see where the light enters the rings from below.

A friend of mine sells DDEs for E46 bimmers. I dont know how the wiring harness works, but Id say just buy those and try to figure out some way to mount it inside your own headlight. For the bimmers it just clips on to a peice of the inner headlight trim, im sure you can figure out some way to hold the ring in place.
IM not sure if the wiring harness is E46 specific but i can find out. its like a 5 min install on the bimmers, just gotta be careful cause the rings are real fragile. They are top of the line shits too, the ones my friend sells. Ill give u a link later.
Ohh and if you are gonna do a mod, if you think its cool, fuck what everyone else thinks, lol. If you think it will be cool as shit and look good to you then do it!

Looks sweet but also will take a lot of work.. props to the author and anyone else who actually does it.
