For all you gear-heads...
For all you gear-heads...
I bought a scangauge a few weeks back, and I love it. I have it set to show my IAT, mpg, average mpg, and timing.
Now for the question. Shouldn't timing go UP when I attempt to accelerate? At cruise, say 60 mph, timing is shown to be 30-35*. If I try to accelerate gently, the timing DROPS to about 18 until I let off the throttle. While coasting, that number jumps up to 40. Shouldn't it be the opposite?
I don't notice any hesitation or pinging ever.
I do notice that my car HATES shitty weather. On a bright sunny day, I will get an average of 24 mpg between my house and work (6 miles hiway) But if its cloudy, cold, foggy, or raining, that number drops to 18. Same road, same speed, same tank of gas.
I have yet to check the timing numbers on a nice day, because we haven't had any for so long.
If anyone has any ideas as to how these things could be related to each other, or any thoughts at all, I would be more than happy to hear them.

no insight to add but this seems like a cool addition. I bet if your watching it constantly, you may be more inclined to be easy on the gas to get better mpg!

i have one of that.. i only use it to check the engine light. www.scangauge.com
It is normal for timing to retard to enable acceleration and avoid pinging.
I monitored my vehicle for regular and premium gas use and found no difference in timing, which I took to mean there would be no mpg benefit to premium. Car never pings that I can detect. Car gets about 24 mpg around town and 26-27 on road. It has no torque converter lockup due to internal hydraulic fault. This has been the case since I've owned the car.
good luck
