Question AC recharge question

I did some searching on some local forums as well as here on the 1st gen forums and still cannot find a clear answer to my question.

Here's the story: My AC stopped working last autumn. I asked my mechanic what the problem might be and he said that it is most likely a freon leak as there wasn't any left in the system.

So now I want to get it fixed but my mechanic does not have the tools to recharge the system. Therefore I want to know how much should a recharge cost including the dye. Should I ask the garage that will recharge to do anything else while they're at it (I saw talk about lubricant)? Let's say that the only problem is the lack of freon and a leak; would a recharge instantly make my AC fully operational? Also, if I get it recharged on Monday, would it not leak out until Saturday which is when I plan on going to see my mechanic so he would find the leak and fix it?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

I might be the seal in the compressor and it could be a very big leak get it fixed dont waste your money on recharging so that it will leak out trust me from personal experience. It will start leaking as your putting it in and careful not to get ripped off sometimes they steal your refrigerant(freon) and tell you otherwise so keep a close eye.

Thanks for a quick reply DUECEON9ER, but how would I know if it's a big or a small leak? And if it is a small leak doesn't it need to leak out a little bit in order to be able to see the dye?

You could use pressure gauges to check pressure. Also use the dye and maybe figure out where its coming from? you shouldn't spend more than maybe $125 for refrigerant and dye. The refrigerant depending on what type you buy should include oil.
