Hey everyone,
I believe the rear main seal on my engine has gone bad. Lots of oil leaking at the back end of the engine and the bottom of the car is coated in oil. Any idea how much it costs to fix this? Does the engine need to be pulled or the tranny? I have 240,000 on the car and cosmetically, it is in great shape but I am trying to figure out if it is worth fixing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

It could be either oil pan or rear main seal due to the age of the car. If it is well maintained with the rest of the car in great shape then it would be worth to get it fixed (I would replace both). It will take about 12-16 hours to replace both rear main seal and oil pan for that car. The dealer can charge up to $1500 before tax for it but if you can find a good mechanic working weekend at his garage you could trim the cost down by half or even more.

Is the car running, starting and idling ok?
It could also be the distributor or the oil filter base, "8" shaped gasket leaking.

Depending how bad it may be leaking, if minor and long term- something like Bars Leaks may work. I've read a bunch about it, even in the forums and it seems to be a temporary fix and in some cases longer. Good luck!

I'm looking at the same issue, but think it may be the oil pan gasket or even tranny pan gasket so I'm replacing both of those first. Washed the under carriage and am waiting to see where it's coming from.
