Try this...
It works for my 1998 TL and should work for yours.
1) Open the Drivers door (keep it open)
2) Press and hold the driver's door master power door lock switch up in the unlock position. (hold it for the entire procedure)
3) Insert the key in the ingition switch and remove it.
Repeat this four more times within 10 seconds.
then leave the key in the switch. Check that the power door locks cycle to confirm that the system is in the programming mode.
(this step must be completed withint 10 seconds)
4) Press the "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" button on the transmitter. The power door locks (except the drivers) cycle to confirm that the transmitter's code was accepted by the car.
5) To program a second transmitter, press it's "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" button within 10 seconds of the programming the first transmitter.
6) Release the Master door lock switch to exit the program mode.
NOTE: Entering the programming mode cancels all learned transmitter codes. So you must program all transmitters once you are in the program mode.
This is good info if you had to replace your transmitter with a new one.

i just bought mine a month ago and watched them do it . doing it from memory so give this a whirl. You may want 2 people for this . have some hold the remote ready to press the button . Get in your car and hold with the door lock/unlock button up in the open position. with your right hand Turn the key on and off to accesory light 5 or 6 times until you here the car go into the programing mode (it will make a noise similar the the door locking) Imediately after hear the noise have the other person press the buttons on the remote . That should do it .
