What will replace your Rl when the time comes?
I have a 97 RL, I love the car with the exception that I wish it was a 99+ so I can have more leg room. These car's last a long time, but everything in life has a finite time, whether enough parts of the car are aging to the point where preserving the car becomes cost prohibited, or ones need just simply change whether is needing a larger vehicle to accommodate a growing family, or you need something more fun to drive.
So what is going to replace or has replaced your first gen RL?
I'm still a little split, my job is not doing as well as it was a few years ago, I love my 1rst gen RL but only two things I hate is not enough leg room for me up front, and the car is a lot lower than most vehicles out of the factory and it gets stuck easier in snow storms at my job because the owner is too cheap and doesn't get the lot plowed in a timely manner, and it's a pain to get it out since it's a huge lot.
The newer 05-06 RL's are getting more affordable, g35x looks like it might be a little sportier and more fun, honda pilot for more capacity or I like the newer 07+ mdx but I would have to wait for the prices to go down a bit. Last vehicle I like is a 04-06 VW Touareg V10 TDI (diesel), test drove one and it was amazing, but they hold their value well, they are harder to get a hold of, and are not practical because of higher than normal repair cost, change a turbo or an O2 sensor you gotta drop the engine, you break the engine an used one is hard to get and a new one goes up to 16k. That suv has torque before you even press the accelerator, it just flies, and it has an air suspension, but repair cost put a fear in me.

My RL was my first car, and before that it was my uncles car. I think once im ready to get a new one i might either get a 2004 version or an suv. I love Jeep Grand Cherokees. My girlfriend has one and it just amazes me. No maintenance was done on it and it still runs.Engine was ran on 3 quarts of oil for probably 6 months and its fine. Its an absolute tank in the snow. The only time i got stuck last year in a big snow storm was because i had to stop in like 2 feet of snow and try and get going again. I eventually got going again.
Our winters are just bad enough for me to want a suv. Plus my hobby(audio) would be alot simpler, and easier with a vehicle like that.

I love the Grand Cherokee, awesome interior, but I hate the gas pedal feel, I touch it and it leapt and the gas mileage toped out near 12 MPG and could easily be lower in the city.
How do the 2nd gen RLs compare to the 1st gen? I've heard you have to go to the repair shop constantly, does that keep up as they age?

When it dies I would love to replace my 1Gen RL with . . . a 1Gen RL with <100K. If gas prices keep going up i may not be able to afford it, but I love this car. Barring that, maybe an accord or CR-V.
i have a friend with a cherokee. The interior's falling apart, it handles weird and makes some frightening noises, but it's lasted him 80K miles and all he's done to it is a wheel alignment (handled scary before), replaced the cat (got ripped off from debris on the highway) and changed his oil - twice.

Crossing from one end of the spectrum to the other. my next mode of transportation will either be:
1. a motorcycle (old ninja 250/500)
2. a NA Miata
From smooth, slow, comfy and safe to loud, harsh and small. If the bike, then dangerous. I've lusted for a motorcycle for many years, it's really my big want in life. and now that I'm reaching the age of majority I figured it's time. Parents say nay but I'll try to work with them. If they still say no, I'll just wait till off to college.
All else fails, i'm getting a 5spd miata. still fun, and I'd definitely put a few $ in mods. No turbo though they'll both turn out to be around the same price. $2500-3000 for the car, and $800-1000 for gear + $1500 for bike. Neither of these will be used for commuting, more for fun/sport.
The RL was the car i learned in, and one I'll never forget. I'm sure there will be another Acura in my future.

2004 Lexus GS430 replaced the 02 RL for me. The wife is currently driving the RL.
I am trying to get a job closer to her work, once that happens, I am replacing the RL with a new Prius. Can't beat 50mpg, especially if we'll be carpooling.

ellover009, unless anyone truly corrects me, I have done the research and can tell not to dream of a 99+ for more legroom; it didn't change. It is the exact same car basically. Lots of cosmetic and suspension changes, but the dimensions did not change.
I just don't want you to have false hope.
As for me, I would consider a 2004, but at 6'6" tall headroom is an issue, and the Lexus LS430 offers more. I might go that route. 2002/03's are under $20k.

Although I love the RL as a daily driver, it has been having it's share of electrical problems lately, SRS light, gas gauge, now climate control for it's mileage (101K). I am working on my project car 94 Accord Wagon (with 223K miles but always reliable) and will be doing engine and transmission swap (from H22A2-Prelude) and interior and exterior mods and then it will become my daily driver. That is the hope anyways.

Been driving Honda products since my first Accord in 1980. I love my 2002 RL, but getting nervous as I approach 100K miles.
Might be blasphemy... but recently I rented a new Ford Fusion.... blew me away...this is a GOOD car. Maybe it's time to go Detroit again.

I would love to pick up an older lexus ls but I live in the north east so I don't think it's the best idea to go rwd, I been told to go with 2 sets of tires but I am stuck with all season tires since I live in an apartment and don't have a place to store extra tires. I would love to have something with more capacity and more fun to drive. Where I work they don't like to plow, and if there's a big snow storm I get stuck because the cars ride height is so low that enough snow gets around and under the car that the wheels can no longer have any traction.
9000Rev Don't worry about reliability, I got an 97 with over 150k, owned it for 7yrs and it's been a pretty reliable car. Only two things that could have been designed better in this car are ball joints and window regulators. This car is not that expensive to own as long as you take good care of it and fix things in a timely fashion. It can get expensive like any car if it's dealer only serviced, if you balance out some of the repairs with a local shop that knows what they are doing you will be all set.
So far over these years biggest ticket item were a power steering rack/pinnion and valve cover seals. More reasonable things were 1 window regulator (I need another one), ball joints, rear wheel speed sensor, I did a windshield wiper transmission my self (junk yard item).
All car's require maintenance, there's two things that will catch up to you, mileage or car age, when a car reaches a certain age it will need more parts replaced than an newer car because even if the engine and transmission were designed to last a long time, other components do not. Fluids get old, plastic crack or harden, wires and hoses are not the same as new, glass is not the same as new.

After I'm done paying my RL off I'm going to go for something small and fast. The Volkswagen R32 looks pretty sweet, and the S2000 has always amazed me. Most likely It will depend on what I can afford five years from now.

Probably going to replace my RL if gas prices skyrocket any more than they have, or I need to drive more.
Considering the following:
- '03+ Accord EX-L 4 cyl (black on black leather only)
- '05-06 Saab 9-2X (the Saabaru wagon with the WRX turbo)- aka subaru that looks a little more euro.
- '05+ Acura TSX
- '06+ Civic EX sedan or Acura CSX (canadian civic with leather, gps, etc starting 2006)
Gas savers with a little luxury FTW

I also looked at some subarus, liked the forester xt, newer outbacks look nice. I personally think subaru needs to take their newer cars in a new direction for their automatic transmissions. You can choose an older model with an antique 4 speed auto thats not designed to handle a lot of power or a souless cvt. I want something.more fun for my next vehicle and awd would help with the snow. Some utility would be nice.

Sometimes i would like to trade my 05 RL for a 01+ RL plus cash. Today is the second time in the same year my sh-awd warning light went off cause i believe another speed sensor went bad. Anyone interested? lol

^ This is true! I'm looking for an 04 in black, white or gray because of the timeless classy design and simple, reliable mechanicals. The fact that it resembles an older S class Mercedes is awesome too
The only thing holding me back are gas prices in the next 3-6 years and the new Hyundai Veloster Turbo that's coming soon

We're currently looking for a 2009 Pilot EX-L or Touring (). Can't find anything decently priced.

The 2005+ is 3 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller than the 2004, but 2 inches shorter. It is also about 100 lbs. heavier. Or are you talking about the sloping as opposed to vertical front grille?
#27
Proportionally the first gens look bigger and have a bigger trunk. The 05-08 look about the size of an Accord and the 09+ look slightly bigger
Mostly it is road presence though. If you drive an 04 RL next to an 05 I personally think the older body style will get more looks, it just has a more stately look to it.

While I love the looks and feel of the M45, they're high compression engines where it's "normal" to burn oil. I don't feel comfortable driving expensive cars where it's normal to see a cloud of smoke come out of the exhaust when you start it up. I had a few Q45's as demos when I sold cars and they did it all the time; one was still under warranty and the dealer told me this is just how it is.

I'm sure they will have some amazing deals, just like they have ridiculous deals on 2012 Civics right now.
