Tire/Fender Problem. Please Help!

Hey guys,

I got a 2002 Acura RL with 225/45/18 Nitto 555 tires on 18x7.5 wheels. All is good except when those times when somebody is sitting in the back)) Even if the person is not that heavy, my back tires seem to rub against the fenders whenever there is a bump or wavy road. I've seen a lot of people with the same tires/wheels set up, so I didn't think there will be such issue. Can anybody suggest something for me? Appreciate all your help!
Gene

I just put some 19x8 wheels and tires on my brothers 97 RL and we had the same problem. its because of this little lip that stick into the fender and when the car bounces or pitches on a turn it contacts the tire. to solve the problem you can use a dremel tool and "shave" that lip down or you can "roll" that part of the fender by bending this lip up and into the fender well. We just dremeled it off for my bro but looking back now i would prolly suggest finding a place to roll them or doing it yourself (although i have no experience in that so youll have to ask someone else about that) because it is metal and it takes a while to do and is quite messy. A shop dremeld mine off but it was plastic on mine(96 3.2 TL). anyways hope this helps

The nittos bulge out more than other tires. So your 225 size will actually look 235, meaning they can rub on that lip like slownlow32tl mentioned.

If you do shave that inner lip, make sure you use touch up paint so there is no bare metal showing. You dont want that sucka to rust.

Yeah good call i forgot to mention that. Or you could cut that rubber cover down a bit and reinstall it.

I have an '04 RL which I am considering filing a lemon complaint on.. see starting problems post... but as of right now.. it is running like a queen! I have a love hate relationship with my car.. anyway.. I am wanting to put new wheels on my car (assuming I keep it). What is a good size for this car. I really like the wheels that are featured as a link to this website. But I have NOOOO clue what size or anything like that. I am wanting a low profile, clean, good looking, cool wheel that is around a 18" (I think) Thanks for the advice.

those forged ronjon wheels only come in 19 but i would say 18 or 19 if your stocks are 17. 20s are too big but i think 19 would be a good pick because it would really set that type of car off like the VIP style in japan. but it also depends on money issues and where you live (ie pot holes and snow/ice)

I live in Texas so snow and ice will only come around when the Rangers when the World Series.. or in other words when hell freezes over. My stocks are 17 inch, so a 19 inch rim would look really sharp. So the next question is do I need an offset wheel? If so are there different sizes of offset?

There are different offsets on wheels. and that is a big factor in determining weather or not it wil rub. On an RL i think wheels with an offset above 45 are fine. My brother has 19x8 +40 offset wheels on his 97 RL but we had to shave his fenders. So i would say stay at 8 or below in width and above 45 in offset

Actually the stock wheels/tires on an '04 RL are only 16"

Yep, it should fit. I'm not sure if the offset should be 42 or 50

Those will fit absolutely perfectly, 50 offset would be ideal, 42 would work, but tire size would make the difference.

What would a good tire size be for that? What will a 42 offset do to the look? I want something that will look normal for the most part.

They will bring the wheels outboard a little. Which will limit how wide you can go with the tires. I doubt it will make it rub, but every mm counts.

hmmm, you wouldn't happen to have a pic with them on would you? I wanted to keep it looking as flush as possible like the stock wheels. I drive pretty quick on the back roads and the back end bounces a little so i would be worried about rubbing.

Sorry, no pics, but you would be the first. I would go with the 50mm offset to play it safe.
