Thought I should Introduce myself and situation........

Hello All!

I am a current/previous Acura Legend Coupe LS owner.. Current meaning it's still parked in the driveway but previous meaning it was totaled on the 26th.... after 10 long love hate expensive years later...

So as you all can imagine I'm in the market for a new car... an RL specifically . While i can't exactly afford the RL id'e like 2005-08 I'm looking for a 2002-2004.... I've come to realize they are pretty hard to find, seemingly and predictably i suppose the OG owners keep them a pretty long time, either that or you vaguely find a shit kicker laying around.

So anyway after doing a long and thorough search I almost did this...... :surrender But my persistence and eagerness wouldn't let up

I then come across this...........

A 2002 Acura RL (No Nav, Gives me the Aux DIY option ) 71k miles, clean title, 1 original owner, elderly fairly well off couple that traded it in for a lexus and apparently it's a snowbird as well.

WISH ME LUCK ALL!!!!!!!!!

Nice find!

I think I saw that car on ebay a few weeks ago if I'm not mistaken.......

How much was the winning bid?

Gotta love dealer maintained cars driven by the elderly LOL! Sounds like a real cream puff!

Any plans instore for the RL?

Oh yeah, and beware of HORRIBLE fuel economy on these rigs. Seriously. Especially if you commute in the city!

I do mostly stop and go around town driving and average 19-20 on premium. on the highway you should see 24. Make sure you give it premium too, because you'll lose 10-15% off of that by using even mid-grade.

Here's something similar in even more prestine condition, that's closer to me that I just couldn't afford if anyone else is interested. 2003, 1 owner, bought at this dealer and maintained at this dealer. 60k miles flawless.....

I love these cars in nighthawk black pearl, pearl white, carbon gray, and silver - in that order.

The black interior is a MUST for me, but I don't mind the tan interior on the 03-04, mostly due to the updated woodgrain color.

But hey, that's just my opinion!

THANK YOU! I mean what i figure is this...... A car like that... honestly iv'e seen the add for that car for a long time maybe 2 years.....

What I figure is, they are sitting on it until maybe a previous RL fanatic's current RL hits 300kplus and just goes and they want to replace it....

I'm also assuming countless people have probably attempted to bargain with them and they wouldn't budge.... which is what scares me from attempting to... Realistically it's an Acura dealership....

I assume from the vague info i have on it, that the OG owner traded it in for a newer RL or other AC.... Which means the dealer gave him trade value which i think means the consumer/customer will always usually get low balled. What do you guys think he got for that AC in a trade? 5k? If that's the case they are trying to make 10k off of it...... Now correct me if I'm wrong...If the dealership bought it at a private auction they would have paid more right?

Where does a dealer spend more money? trade in's or Dealer auctions? If i was more confident and had the right info I might just take a stab it.......

But another issue I have is, where do i negotiate on that kind of car? It's 10 years old? They say hey, it's been garaged, it's near mint, has 60k, 1 owner and maintained at that very dealer..... How do i argue? That's my fear with those types of cars.... Id'e need that thing down at atleast 9500/9700k

Besides that the color holds me back..... If it was Night hawk black id'e probably slave myself for it....

First, tan cars typically sell cheaper than other colors as it is not nearly as desirable as black, white or silver. Green, tan and maroon are typically much less.

Dealers usually get a better deal when they take a car in trade. I was a dealer for 4 years, auctions are sometimes not a good place to buy cars, esspecially recently. Prices are out of control.

As far as what the tan one with 60k on it is worth, it's worth as much as someone is idling to pay for it. I find it hard to believe anyone would pay more than 10k for it. Private party value on it is $10,700. Hell, you can get a 2002 LS430 with those miles for 15k.

Ken, if you still come into the first gen section, what did you sell your RL for? I believe it had around 60k on it, was mint and was white.

Thanks, this is helpful... The color concept makes plenty of sense as one of my hangups naturally is the color.. I would def enjoy the car considering its condition and mileage but changing the color would always be in the back of my head....
I'm also suspecting that they're asking atleast 5-7k over invoice i Don't know how off I am....

Can I Pm You?

I just began sweeping Dealer used inventory's and I came across this 2006 Acura RL with roughly 10k more miles than the 02 i posted for 13500

Problem is there isn't much info on the car from the site.... No photos or info... Im wondering how great the condition of the car could be for that price..... Pretty sure Iv'e seen 2005's go for way more with that mileage....

Wow, that's clean!

I'd honestly buy it since its an 04 with NAV and all the upgrades the 04 brought. Looks like the previous owner really cared for it. I don't even see a scratch or dent, and the interior is beautiful!

DO IT!! Tint (light or dark), and it will look great and add that bit of contrast that will help it stand out.

I hear ya... And the 04 part helps but god that tan color is ugly.... it's like a elderly person color and takes away from the sharpness of the car. Secondly... the 04 didnt have an auxiliary jack, did it? And with that nav Unit, i don't think there's an easy way around it.....and then of course if i don't have some sort of maintenance history, that 100k and over thing is gonna urk me but damn the price considering how the pics look and the year is def tempting..... I can either grab this asap or drive 2 hours to Ac and try to negotiate the 02 with no Nav in silver that looks slightly cleaner with 30k less miles.....

(ff&%%^*k) Decisions decisions If i get this tan car, I know im gonna be dying to get it painted black somewhere down the road....

^ Yea I hear ya.... I actually plan on tinting ASAP and i really am going to have it painted NightHawk black within a year or so.... I tried on a boatload of wheels on this particular car and color and the not even wheels make that color look nice......

When I get this thing painted black im gonna go for something like this...

I definitely understand your love for black. I have an '01 black on black with 35% tint. Have '07 accord v6 rims that I'm installing in the spring.

The 04 interior is nicer for sure. Don't go for the '02 silver if you love black.

Don't bother painting it, unless you know someone in the industry. A quality paint job costs at least 3-4 grand!

Here's mine:

I paid $3400 (canadian) from an acura dealer with all service records, new rad, balljoints, and timing belt. Bought it in October 2010 with 178K miles. Cleared the tail lights myself to look like 03-04 ones. Spent $150 on tints, waxed the paint, did 2 oil changes myself, and bang- we're in Jan 2012. Great cars, and worth the wait if you find what you really WANT.

That gold car is not factory... Or did they really sell the gold cars with the gold badges? I have the silver badges and while the color is still bland, it doesn't look nearly as awful as that car with the gold badging. I have those rims too and the acura logo is silver.

What do you guys think of this scenario that transpired tonight.. LOL

Car: http://dealers.aultec.com/v/index.cf...959915&lang=en

I called the dealership, I get the owner... Now today is my day off and I have no credit, not bad Credit Just never established any. My Cosigner and I have conflicting schedules... Because of My day off I was able to make the trip to RI from Ma to negotiate.

So listen to this.... It's about 5:30 I call the dealer n ask when are they closing, They say "in a half hour".... I said "Oh i was assuming 9 or atleast 7.... blah blah... he says "Come in the morning, I said i can't because of my schedule.... So he then tells me...

"I'm gonna call my other salesman/co-owner and see if he can meet you here tonight then....."

But wait...... This is only after he tells me that there's been alot of interest in the car and that it wont sit too long......

Anyhow..... Like a keen 6th sense, i can smell leverage.....

So anyhow i get up there..... He's already got the car warmed up for me.... It's freezing outside.... What a nice guy...... (he ain't foolin me)

So i take it for a test drive.... No question the car is clean and real nice... But hey, it's expected it's an RL and has had 2 serious owners

So i come back, i do a walk around, check the rear fenders, under the hood, the interior, everything checks out... the front tires id'e give a 5 n id'e give the rears an 8 the rear passenger quarter panel has a few barely noticable bubbles 3 or 4 but they're there.... otherwise the car is very clean i must admit... the paint and bumpers are damn near mint

So the asking price is 8999 I tell him i'll give him 7800.... He immediately goes on his spiel... blah blah blah... i keep my mouth shut and just listen......

THEN HE PROCEEDS TO TELL ME HE's Going to show me the INVOICE... Now maybe this (TRICK) is common but i didn't really buy it.... but the car is already close to my range as is so entertain him.... He shows me 7'900

So they only have a mark up of $1'010?

he continues on... typical blah blah not trying to push you into something, not what we do etc......

I say "He I'm not saying you're a bad guy but for all i know you wrote that card up before i walked in here and filed it in that little file cup...... I wait for his reaction..... (He denies it holding a partial laugh back and realizes I'm not an idiot.....)

Keeps telling me about the car..... I say... Listen i don't care of thats a ferrari out there. It has 100k miles on it and the early signs of cancer......

he says "we can clean that up or fix it" I said "No you won't you'll get the color match touch up and dot it"
I tell him.. how do you get rid of cancer on your foot? You cut your foot off.... he shut right up lol.....

Any how.... I mad another offer i said i'll 8'300 and that's my last offer I can not go any higher...... he begins telling me about more nonsense... blah blah and says i can't go lower than 8'500 blah blah.... I said well it is what it is.... it's a nice care but it still has 100k miles we both know the color isn't immediately appealing, it's showing symptoms of cancer, the tires aren't what you would consider dealer ready etc..... 8'300 is my last offer...... He let me walk, gave me his card with the number he offered and I refused it..... I said "You have my number correct? You know what my last offer was"

If you change you're mind, I'll sign asap...... He hestitated and then gave me his card again lol.....

Do you guys think he was a clown for making a big fuss over $200?

He kept bring up the 200 dollar difference to me... I kept flipping it right back.... I said "You're right it is only a $200 difference"

What's the chances I'll get the call tommorrow?

He'll come back begging, just be prepared to wait 1-3 days! Very few people look into buying used RLs, especially in that color.

The rust bubbles worry me though. When you buy yours, remove those rubber strips in the wheel wells that surrounds the wheel arches as they trap in dirt, sand, salt and moisture which accelerates the rate of rust.

If you can get it for $8300, take it. I'm sure you liked that interior! The real wood and metal dash.

Thanks sir... I hope you're right! Im guess because of the situation..... being all after hours and that this guy was in his early 30's (real early) and the Original guy (owner I believe, Al Merill) who setup the meeting and left... When they speak tommorrow to find out of the deal didn't go through over 200$ I hope they square it up sooner than late and get that call so i can get the this shit crackin!

Im not too worried about them selling someone on it... Im worried about someone potentially looking for that specific car (like Myself) and being more flexible.... The care was only listed 2 days ago.....

Again thanks for the kind words sir... and yes I will immediately remove the rubber liners from the wheel welds.....

I sold my '02 RL for just under $11,000. It was a navi model, white with tan interior. Mint condition. 67k miles.

It's now for sale for $13,000...

I don't ever remember seeing any gold RLs on the road at all! Thus, I'm just assuming this color was not popular back in the days. Losing a sale over $200 is just stupid on the dealer's part. He'll call back in a few days!

Did you trade it in or sell it privately? If it was a private sale, at $13k.

I wonder what the "invoice" he would show would say. BTW, I actually like the RL in gold. I usually hate cars and Hondas in gold, but when I saw mine I really liked it (hence, I bought it). I usually love Hondas in that dark green but I really don't like the RL in dark green.

Gold does look classy. Here's a 99 that they used on an episode of the Sopranos

I was wondering.....

Could my timing be off? I mean it's the beginning of the month, not to mention they've only hade the car for a week... Doesn't all that play a factor?

and not just with any call back but with how well i can negotiate the price....? They probably want to run through a few people before giving in....

and not just with any call back but with how well i can negotiate the price....? They probably want to run through a few people before giving in....
Hey don't beat yourself up over it I hate when you desire something especially a car and you finally obtain it, but then a week later you find a better one for a better price lol. Hang in there man im pretty sure if this one doesn't go through, you'll find a better and a nicer one. Its all about patience good luck.
