DIY instructions for timing belt?

98 RL 194k miles

Any pointers or links to DIY instructions for replacing the timing belt, water pump and whatever other components are recommended (eg tensioner?)?

Thanks

To be totally honest... I wouldn't DIY that project. I watched a friend/tech do mine and it was a tedious job. Unless, of course you've done tbelts before.

I hear you. I did the timing belt on my Saab V6 (dual cams) a few months ago and it was a job. However, I had detailed DIY instructions with pics from another Saab owner and it saved quite a bit of money.

It would be quite a save on your bank account if you did it yourself, but it'd be quite a headache to boot. Not to mention the other unforseen expenses such as the timing belt tensioner, and seals. I can get you a list of the parts that were done on my 04, if you like. It started as a tbelt, but when he got in there and tore it apar, he found other things.

If anyone attempts this, they should make a DIY out of it

No sweat, dude. FYI tho... you can get away without doing the tensioner and throttle body gasket. I was just being overly cautious. He had to take the throttle body off and I figured I might as well toss on a new gasket. And the tensioner was still good, but since he was in the area, I told him to do it.
The water pump is the most expensive part. That thing is hyooooge.

Good idea to always do the tensioner as well as the belt. I also have Saab 9-5 V6 turbo. Saab offered 'free' timing belt replacement at the first interval (60k miles) but did *not* do the tensioners along with the belt. There were a rash of destroyed engines at 80-110k miles when the tensioner finally failed, snapped the belt and destroyed the engine....

For the small incremental cost one can avoid a very painful penalty for failure...

I like the 105k mi interval on the RL much better than the short one on Saab.
