Have you done any work to the cluster at all? Replaced any bulbs? The same thing is happening with my fuel gauge but I recently replaced my cluster bulbs so I am thinking something is loose back there. My fuel gauge works once in a while and my gas light comes on. We'll see. Gonna try and get in there this week.

I had the same thing happen and thermostat was fine. Landed up changing the gauge with one from the junkyard (same yr car with less mileage). Works fine now .

^^ So you have lower mileage now? Lol, time to sell!
Buying a used car can really be deceiving.

The mileage isn't stored in the gauge cluster

R_R4 really?? thanks Obama. Gauge works sometimes and tends to look like it is on the colder side.

Really? Seriously, check the screws in the back of the cluster. My fuel gauge worked once in a while, would over around E and then go all the way out. Turns out the screw behind the cluster for the fuel gauge was 1/2 turn loose. Tightened it up and now all is good. It's worth a look. Would take you 45 minutes.
