Tires.. WHICH ONES?? Help
I have oem Michelins on my 07 rdx, need to replace them with a more quiet ride. Lots of driving in heavy rain, so hydroplaning is an issue. Looking at Yokohamas, Also Continental DWS, and Bridgestone H/L Escopia. Anyone have any suggestions ? I dont like the noise of the oems, and last week I definitely had a scare with hydroplaning. Just turned 30,000 mi. and my tires are thin.
Is there an option to high performance tires that might work? Thanks

not an SUV ...a Big Hatch
Yes, the OEM's hydroplane very bad with low miles.
These 20" Toyo's drive great in the rain. Snow, I don't know never been in any. But they do really great in rain. I don't know if they make them in the stock size.

I went with the Yokohama AVID ENVigor and have been VERY VERY VERY happy with them.
Most notable right off is the much lower road noise, I did not realize how loud the OEM's were.
Gas mileage has gone up to the low 20's now with a city/highway mix of 25/75.

Do some research before you buy Conti DWS. There have been some issues on the 2G RL forum where they are hard to keep in balance or out of round or something. Not saying you should not buy them, but you should be aware of the issues. It may be just bad luck.

with any tire decision, there is always give n take. the DWS have a weaker side wall and duller turn in than what you experience with OEM. However, where they make up, and do so unmatched, is on any surface non-dry. The dry performance is just ok in that they do no response as sharply and athletically as the OEM, but in anything else, these tires are the BEST. Tirerack's objective data cannot be ignored. The DWS crush any tire on wet surfaces and snow. period.
the reason why i suggest the DWS to you is because you came on the board and in your 2nd sentence mention rain and hydroplaning. The number one reason why i pulled my OEMs off before they needed to be replaced. in new england, we get all angles of weather. the DWS are the best all weather tire, especially for heavier rains and snow. If you live in a place that is primarily dry and prone to some rain, look elsewhere for better dry performance. Ive run Yokos before and Bridgestones, the DWS are better.
ps: the balancing was an issue for me as well - took a few times. also, running the tires at cold 34psi really improved road feel and turn in. so, thast what i do.

Are the OEM Michelins really that bad?? I've always sworn by Michelins yet with the RDX I get the impression they're turds. I rotate/balance my tires every 8k and usually get well beyond the 'rated' tread life of tires, so I would like to think I could get more than...30k?

its not that they are 'bad'; its that they are treacherous above about 20k miles in wet weather. its not that they are prone to hydroplaning - they just do. in anything remotely wet, at least for me, my OEMs after 20k miles were unsafe. and thats enough for me to take them off, i still have them in case i sell the thing, but i will never use them again. As for performance - dry grip is good and they are very athletic tires. braking performance not as good. the DWS brake much better.
i have a massive thread on the OEM tires on this board, but for some reason who ever made this sub-forum did not carry it forward.

OP, Welcome to AZ! And whatever you do here, don’t get sucked into “Ramblings”.
