Tire Storage
Tire Storage
I saw a post asking for more information on how to get your wheels/tires off the floor somewhere between here and 3GTL/4GTL but I can't find it now. So for whom ever was asking, here is my solution. From the Rack...$130. Bolts to studs, accepts about 6 tires in my case.
This is my next project, except I need to hold 12 wheels (4 for the RDX and 8 for my tinker toy). I'm going to use a similar design that's just wider and a little heavier duty with the help of a local fab shop.
I finally got my rack built and installed. I paid $212 and it will hold 12 wheels (4 RDX and 8 DSM) once I get the 19's out of the box and get tires. Look in my garage for the pic since I suck at attaching pictures.

I've got something similar in my garage and it's great for recovering space in the RDX cave...but I have a naive question: do the bars on the bottom of the shelf create flat spots on the two points of each tire making contact with the bars? Should I be rotating the tires on the rack occaisionally to prevent flat spots?
Wow, congratulations. That is sofa king cool. I wish I had that much space to work with. Right now any plans for obtaining anything bigger than a sprinkler head are on hold as I have no room left in the garage. Haven't seen the top of my work bench for two years. I'm kinda in denial :blindfold
Ha Ha, I was that way till I got this thing up in the air. Between my Talon, the RDX and my Mountaineer, the garage is pretty full. My next project is to rehab some kitchen cabinets I got and make them into tool storage under my current 8' workbench.
The eventual goal is to build a 2-3 car tool shed in the backyard and get the Talon out there, or rent some space in my neighbor's 40x80 pole building. He already has a paint booth and 2 post lift waiting.

The rack looks great! Now, if you happen to live in the DC or Philadelphia metro areas and don't have the space or inclination to create a rack then TireVan can help store your tires for $40/year

When I was building my rack I asked about rotating the bottom tubes at 45 degree angles for fear of flat spots, but when you are only talking the weight of the rim + tire you'd have to let the tires go semi-flat for a long time. Also the cost of rotating the tubes or going with tubular steel would have almost doubled the cost.
