Tire sizing for winter
Tire sizing for winter
Hi,
I have a 2008 RDX Technology Pkg. so it has tires size of 235/55/18. I am thinking about getting winter tires and i am torn between two sizes of tires for winter. I know that thinner winter rims are recommended but with thinner rims, handling is given up. Which size would you guys recommended for WINTER TIRES.
215/65/17
or
225/65/17
I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada so the winters here are deadly.
Thanks in Advance.

FWIW, 215/65-17 is a lot closer in rolling diameter than 225/65-17.
Assuming 17 inch wheels fit, and I have no idea if they do, then another question would be, which tire is cheaper? And within each size, which has more choices?
Either size will work, but 225/65-17 is farther off in rolling diameter than 215's
Oh and by the way, you are interested in narrower tire section widths, not thinner rims. Typically a thinner rim would be a narrower width rim. That being said, with a 215 section, you could actually reduce your rim width from 7.0 to 6.5 inches.

To report back, the wheels off an 06 RSX will fit the 08 RDX. I just test fit them, front and rear. I'm ordering tires and TPMS valve stems on Monday. The thing should look beafy with those little wheels and more rubber!

Just had a set of 17" Acura steelies and Dunlop SJ6 studless snowtires (225/65-17) installed. These tires in particular are a dedicated LT/SUV winter tire and came highly recommended by both the Acura dealer and a local independant tire shop I checked out as well.

One of my conditions for buying the RDX was that they supply, free of charge, a set of winter wheels/tires, so I don't know the exact price of the package they gave me (17" steel wheels+snowtires+TPMS+centercaps+new lugnuts) other than it was somewhere in the 1400$ (Canadian) range.

Thanks, the whole deal went down as $1500 off MSRP, plus that winter wheel/tire setup, so I saved roughly 3G's overall. I did have to buy my own winter floor mats though LOL!
I am probably late to the party, but in my personal opinion, I like to stick with OE sizes. Yes, you can use 225/65R17 say a Blizzak WS70 or a Mich X-Ice XI2. Or even pop on a 225/60R18. But unless you have another set of rims its a pain in the a$$. Plus you got to reinstall the TPMS. Right now, I got some 235/55R18 Blizzak DM-V1. In my personal opinion they work great! A solid LT/SUV snow tire. I am really digging these right now, look and feel. Have some other friends that use them on their RDX and got great results....just waiting for the first snow fall in NJ!!

I just went with the 16's cause I have less money into the wheels (already had them) / tires / TPMS then I would have had buying one set of 235/55-18's Plus now I can swap tires in my garage in about 20 mins. It allows me to run my summers much later in the year too
Let me know please, my winters aren't as bad as yours, I'm from Southern Ontario
Correction
So TPMS works in that wheel? Did you use factory sensors>
