Rear Bumper
Rear Bumper
Has anyone had their rear bumper repainted? Someone put a 3 inch (pretty deep) scratch on my rear bumper over the weekend in NYC. I took the car to the dealer recommended body shop, they quoted me $350 for having to repaint the whole bumper. My only concern is how well they can match the paint. My car is grigio metallic gray so I am kinda worried. The guy at the shop seemed to know what he was talking about, but I would like to hear others to see what I can expect. Thanks a lot guys.
If they try to blend it, it may show and if they repaint the entire bumper there is the possibility that they won't get the match right due to flex additive. Take a look at some of their work. Shop around.
A competent body shop should match the paint just fine, but do you really want to spend $350 to refinish the entire factory coated bumper? Or take a rate hike on your comprehensive insurance? (If your deductable is low enough.)
Take a look at: http://www.drcolorchip.com/. For 40 or 50 bucks you can make a pretty darn good repair yourself, in the exact Acura color and have some left over for future chips.
If the scratch is deep enough, build it up some first with Duplicolor filler primer. Spray it into a cup and brush it into the scratch -- several times should take out most of the depth. Then use the Dr Colorchip. Follow the directions and you should get a nice repair.

Someone rear-ended my 2009 RDX, definitely making pretty deep scratches across the bottom entire width of the bumper.
$350 was the cheapest price quoted to 'fill' the scratches and repaint.
$750 was the quote I used for the repair, and was paid by the other party insurance. I chose this repair shop (over the other one), based on the physical appearance of the shop, how clean were the working areas, and the factt that the second shop was filled with BMWs, Mercedes, Bentleys, etc. The first cheaper shop was small, dirty, and filled with old Toyotas. But maybe they would have done a good job anyway, who knows, but since I was not paying ...
The reason for the high cost is that the bumper has to be completely removed from the vehicle. Then scratches are filled with plastic (molten/ melted). Then only areas affected are primed, painted. I also had a couple of small shopping cart scratches fixed at the same time. The painter just spots each damaged area - the color match was perfect.
Then the entire bumper is repainted with clear, and buffed. That is why the individual damaged areas cannot be seen.
BTW, my color is the light silver, which shows scratches much worse than a darker color (I think).

Thanks guys, Acura recommended a body shop in town that seemed professional so I went with them. They removed the bumper fixed the scratches and repainted it. To my surprise I could not tell the difference from other parts of the body. It looks great!
