Loud violent noise when putting in reverse on a hill

I've noticed that whenever I'm parked on an inclined driveway and I put the car from park to reverse there is a very loud THUNK and shock. This must not be good for the car. It's scary loud and it sounds very violent. If this was a GM I would piss in my pants kinna loud. It only occur if the front of the car is up and the rear is down and I'm trying to back down from the slope. It's silk smooth if the front is facing downward and I'm trying to back up a slope. It's also fine if the surface is flat.

Is this normal?

Do yourself a favor and when you are parked on a hill or steep incline, set the parking brake before you put the car in park. This helps insure that the car does not slide against the Park gear lock and should prevent you from getting the thunk.

Ya I made it a habit of when parking the car (anywhere, incline or flat land) pull up, stop with brake on foot, throw it into neutral and press e-brake, release your foot off the brake pedal, foot back on brake and into park.

By putting into park and not using the e-brake (especially on an incline) you're putting a lot of stress on the parking fork in the tranny.

Oh and then to move the car, just put it in what ever gear you want (d for forward, r for reverse) release e-brake and be on your way.

That should get rid of the clunk. Don't be afraid to really press that e-brake in especially on an incline, when you put the car in neutral after applying the e-brake and it begins to slowly roll thats a sign that you need to apply more pressure (i.e. press the ebrake in more)

peace!

Thanks! I'll give that a try. This is the first car that I've owned that has a problem with me putting it into park first or pulling it out of park last.

This should be done on all cars with autotragic trannys.
