Chirp/squeak at idle = bad turbo

I've had an intermittent chirping sound (almost like crickets, bearing noise from an HVAC fan, or squeaky fan belts) at idle, most noticeable during warmer weather. Turning off the HVAC, in or out of gear, blipping the gas, noise was constant. I have an 08 Tech.

Today the dealer advised I have a bad turbo - they've had to replace turbos on a few others with the same symptoms. This is a first since my experience with turbo failure involves clouds of oil smoke and vehicle in limp mode if it runs at all. Zero performance issues with the RDX.

It has 15,500 miles on it. I noticed this noise last summer at about 5,000 miles but not during colder weather. Strange, huh?

I'm certainly not doubting that you changed your oil properly, but I'm wondering if the dealer gave you any hassle over oil change history, or if they tried to indicate that oil change neglect was an issue in any of the cases?

No mention was made of oil change history, I think because they've seen this problem before - I was told there's a service bulletin on it. In any event, oil changes were done between 10-15% as shown on the MM.

Well BleuM&M, you got me paranoid with this one.
Today I listened to the turbo through a mechanic's stethoscope. I could access the exhaust manifold and the turbo itself through the louvers in the heatshield. At cold idle, warm idle and through various RPM ranges the turbo sounded smooth and quiet.

My 07 is at 48000 miles. That yours failed at only 15500 (on its 2nd or 3rd oil change) would seem to indicate that Acura got a bad run of bearings from the supplier. Perhaps this is isolated to a small VIN range.

I could not find a TSB on turbo bearings anywhere. Has anyone seen the TSB or had any experience with turbo noise?

ps. You can get a mechanic's stethoscope for about $10 from Pep-Zone or Auto-Boys and listen to the turbo yourself. Any grinding or metal-on-metal scraping would be an early sign.

Thank's BleuM&M for the heads-up.

Sam, I'm betting you'll have no problems with yours. I might be a victim of bad parts as you mentioned. As I said earlier, I noticed this sound last summer with around 5,000 on the clock. If anything, it's a testimonial that a year and 10,000 miles later it's still making the same sound - and no turbo debris, just chirping.

Update: 2 days after I should have gotten the call my RDX was ready, I stopped by the dealer to learn there had been complications. Bolts were stripped while re-installing the downpipe. Downpipe on order.

The service rep said he had looked at my turbo and was surprised there were no oil leaks, since apparently that's also a symptom. Maybe my bearings hadn't gotten wobbly enough to eat the seals. This may validate Sam's thought about a bad bearing run - mine weren't bad enough to cause seal failure.

This dealer sells a ton of RDXs in central IN and have had just a few with this problem, which tells me it's a stretch to put these turbo problems in the same league as Mazda.

Whatever, the dealer now owns my RDX since they made and I accepted a GREAT deal on an 09 TL SH-AWD Tech.

was it a definite squeak/chirp noise? i've had some rattling noise almost all the time when i turned on the HVAC. replaced the a/c compressor and part of it went away.

It sounded like a cricket behind the dash, or a squeaking fan belt. No rattling. I could hear it with HVAC off.

I have an 07 RDX.

I hear squeaking from under the dash behind my steering wheel when I turn the temperature up and down. Some mechanism for the climate control must be making it.

Also when I drive and accelerate, I hear a a burping sound coming from the engine. I cant tell what it is, but it happens right after the transmission shifts and the turbo closes. So either I have a faulty transmission or bad turbo. I'm at 24k miles. I'm going to get this looked at soon. It's been make this noise since last summer.
