07' Tech Leaking Power Steering Rack
07' Tech Leaking Power Steering Rack
I have 80k on my 07' and just had to replace the power steering rack. PS fluid was leaking into the boot on the drivers side. Since the nearest Acura dealer is 5 hours away I took it to the closest Honda dealer for replacement. They replaced with A1 Cardone rack without asking me if I wanted it or the OEM. I didn't find out until I questioned after the fact. I assumed they would use OEM. They charge me $635 for the rack. They misquoted the labor hours so ended up paying only $165 for labor. The steering is much tighter and the wheel doesn't return to center on its own. Anyone have any experience with a new rack? Will it "loosen up" or do I need to go back and have them adjust something? Thanks for any insight!
No - but did you have a 4-wheel alignment after the replacement? Usually an improper toe adjustment will prevent the wheels from *centering*. or maybe its the camber - forget - anyway, if you did have an alignment, then something else is wrong. It should feel and drive the same way as before the new rack.
Thanks DC, they did do an alignment, but they were definitely in a hurry as is took them about 7 hours to do the job and it was closing time. I will have to take it back and have the alignment re-done.
Where was your rack leaking at? I noticed a little oil residue on mine near the plug. I haven't yet looked into where exactly it was leaking/seeping.

I don't know exactly where the leak was but what I do know is the "boot" or dust cover on the drivers side was filled with fluid to the point that it ended up blowing out and leaking wherever I parked. I could see fluid all over the area around the boot.
Looks like you could have just rebuilt the rack. If you were mechanically savvy. I'd hate to see what your entire repair cost was.
I wonder if you could have just asked your dealer to rebuild the original? Maybe they don't because they wouldn't make as much money? idk.
