Who wants a catback exhaust?

I was speaking to CP-E the other day and they are willing to make an exhaust for the RDX. I'd like to get an idea of how many ppl would be interested in a catback exhaust. If I can generate enough interest I can get this project moved ahead of some of their other projects. Nothing has been developed yet but I want to see what kind of interest there is so that we can get a prototype developed and then a pre-sale.

To get an idea of the fit, finish, and quality of their products here are some pictures of their Mazda CX-7 Catback.

http://www.cp-e.com/imgs/cx7_dualCB1_large.jpg

Here is a basic description of the exhaust components:

The catback system will be made with custom made 12” oval mufflers that CP-E uses on their Speed3 systems.. The mufflers are hand TIG welded and the exhaust system will be 304 stainless steel.

Count me in! They're going to have to compete with ATLP and their exhaust. If this can beat the ATLP in numbers and sound better, I'm in for it!

Sounds pretty interesting and CP-E reputation is very good, but I wonder how long will it take to manufacture the exhaust and make it compatible with the existing Hondata ECU upgrade. Church Automotive in fact made 3" exaust, but they have no idea of replicating it at the moment.

Count me in, but I agree that they need to move fast, and be competitive with ATLP.

I like the conservative sound of the ATLP. I just wished that ATLP had polished cannisters instead of the burnished type (looks cheap from the back IMO). Could CPE beat ATLP's price? DP available?

The ATLP exhaust sounds way too tinny and buzzy. Make something a bit more throaty sounding and make it turbo-back, not cat-back, and I'll buy it in a second.

Thanks for starting this thread Excelerate

It's official! We're looking for a local RDX to create a prototype turboback exhaust system. If anyone is interested please do contact us here at the shop (301-576-6142) and we'll give you all of the details. Or, post here and we can start a dialogue. We're really excited to extend our RDX product line!

First off, thanks a lot guys! We think you're going to be blown away by our new generation of exhaust products. The MS3 downpipe is one example with its cast bellmouth, high-flow cat, and CAD/FARO modeled pipe routing:

http://www.cp-e.com/imgs/SP3CattedDP1_Big.jpg

We're just about to have our 135i downpipes rapid prototyped, and those will also have cast 3" bellmouths and high-flow cats. I'll post some pictures the first change I get. In the mean time, if you want to hear what some of our exhausts sound like, here's our CX7 catback:

http://www.cp-e.com/2102.html

And here's a few sound clips from our new 135i catback:

If the past is any indicator, we typically get the prototypes done quickly, but the final product usually takes a while since we use parts that are almost totally custom made. At the moment we're limited because we need an RDX to get started. We could theoretically have a full turboback prototype made in a week. So the sooner we get a local RDX in our hands, the faster we can get you guys some sound clips!

I've had some idle thoughts about the RDX you need for the exhaust work - how long would you need it? Then there's the unleashed potential from a nicely-done downpipe...

Force-Fed,

The exhaust very nice. I asked this from ATLP before: will you have a long enough section to put in a resonator on my own?

Thanks for planning a cast bellmouth. Will there be a catless option?

Guys, I apologize again for my infrequent updates. We just rolled out our new FullControl flash for the MS3 vehicles and we're a bit overhwhelmed with the response! If any of you need immediate answers to any questions you may have please don't hesitate to give us a call, 301-576-6142. And thanks for the interest in our products guys!

Hey Bleu!

We'll probably need the car for about a week, at least initially. That'll allow us enough time to create a prototype which you may drive around on for a while, but at some point we'll need to re-install your factory exhaust so that we can create welding fixtures from the prototype. Then once we go into production you'll recieve a finalized example.

So we'd need the car for about a week, but we'd need a return visit shortly thereafter.

To be completely honest, I can't really say

We won't know what is or isn't possible until we start work, but I'd be really surprised if there weren't at least a foot of straight section where you could add in a resonator. But frankly, we'll probably have a resonator option (in addition to the mufflers) so this may become a moot issue. We'll know more once we start wrenching on the car.

Sure! We're really excited to offer up a cast downpipe. We actually just finished the rapid prototypes of our 135i cast bellmouths. The 135i has twin turbos, so it requires two downpipes. The stereolithographic rapid prototypes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereolithography) are below:

Of course the bellmouths will proudly wear the cp-e™ logo

Both bellmouths side by side

Stock versus cp-e

Notice how smooth the transition is on the cp-e downpipe as compared to stock

The decision to cast the 135i downpipe bellmouths was mostly driven by packaging constraints, but the cast portion of the pipe will outflow, and outlast anything that we could fabricate from stainless pipe. We will also very likely offer a catless option.

I think as long as you don't mind making a couple trips down to MD we can make it work! In fact, we may be able to supply you with a loaner vehicle depending on when we begin the project. If you're still interested, please email me at jgartenhaus@cp-e.com and I'll provide you with Josh Adams cell phone number. He's the boss around here and he'll be able to coordinate all of the details with you. Thanks for the offer sir!!
