Rear wheel flaps- what are those for?!

I've always wondered why there are rubber flaps in front of each rear tire (not the mud guards). They seem to break up the clean lines of the RDX. Do they serve any purpose such as protecting the body integrity? Does anyone think it would be possible or harmful to remove them?

You'll find similar diffusers in front of the front tires as well. They direct airflow around the tires.

Is that for extra traction at high speeds? Maybe I haven't noticed, but I don't recall seeing them on other cars

Saab's and some Audi's have had them for years. I wonder if it has to do with keeping water spray from the front tires from hitting the brake discs or rear tire tread???

Makes sense.. don't need anything more forces affecting your traction when you are at speed.
