anyone do the coolant bypass mod for the throttle body? summer is around the corner and its a goodway to keep the intake manifold cooler.. just curious if anyone else has done it

I'm intrigued...but I have no idea what this coolant bypass is you speak of. Time to start Googling.

i did it with my tsx few years back.. havent had any issues even with the 0degree temps we saw this year.. here you can read alittle about it here https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-tsx-performance-parts-modifications-126/throttle-body-coolant-bypass-mod-649712/

I see...interesting to say the least, although since our air passes through the IC I'm not sure this mod will have as much impact on the RDX as on other vehicles. Also, given how fast the air flows through the TB and the relatively low surface area to volume ratio, I doubt very much heat is actually being transferred to the intake charge.

You might see a larger IAT difference at idle since the TB is practically closed and the engine is at a very low rpm, but under normal driving the net difference will be less since the air is flowing through the system that much faster and not bottle-necking at the TB. Still, I'm curious to see results if anyone has done it. I'm just using my own (sometimes-broken) reasoning.

have you ever touched the intake manifold after a 35 min drive? still gets pretty hot. which is why people get the gaskets to help the heatsoak.. hondata did a thing on it and with the gasket and the TB coolant bypassed netted a hp increase..

I don't doubt that the manifold gets hot, but I do doubt how much of that heat is transmitted to the intake air in the short time it has to flow through it. I searched around and this is a popular debate on many different platforms. LS1 guys seem to be on the fence, some VW guys swear by it, and some Mazda guy wrote up some thermal equations showing that at best it's worth no more than .25% power gain. I understand Hondata is saying it might be worth an increase, but dynos can vary by a few percent on back to back runs - without consistent results it's hard to substantiate the claim.

In the end the cost and risk are essentially zero, so I'd say go for it if you're curious or just bored. I might consider it as I live in Phoenix and "freezing" is a thing I do to water to make ice and nothing more. It's one fewer thing to leak in the engine bay as well. But would I expect any noticeable power gain? I'm one to believe something when I see it.

its more than you think. aluminum is a great conductor of heat. that's why they use it in heat sinks. I was actually thinking of doing this mod in conjunction with getting the manifold coated and installing the thermal gasket.

Can the thermal gasket install DIY? If not, how many labor hours might it be?

a person not knowing what they are doing would take probably 4 hours to install a person knowing what they are doing will take probably 2 hours.. its not too difficult its just removing all the things to get to the bolts to do it that is a pain.. the coolant bypass can be done at anytime and is probably a hour job to do for a novice

800cc no reason for bigger then that.. really 600cc is plenty for the turbo, it can only take so much even if its possible to upgrade the turbo the 800cc will handle 500hp.. may need to upgrade the rail, fuel pressure regulator as well as the fuel pump though if we ever need to go above 350hp
