darn nail in tire

Took a nail in the tire, where the factory installed tires are now close 40000 km, and 2.5 years of usage. The nail is right near the shoulder blocks of the tire, and the tire technician indicated that it would not be properly fixed due to the location. And because RDX is AWD and the low tread life remaining, changing just one tire would not be good for the drive system.

So had to shop for tires, and the OEM Michelins Pilot cost a bundle, ~ $240 a piece! So will go with the Yokohama Avid V4S instead. Same V speed rating, about the same tread life, but probably more sporty; not sure the comfort comparison though. Will have to wait till Wednesday for installation, since the tires are being ordered online.

Some independent tire shops will repair the puncture with a plug.

Since the area where your puncture is in an area of flex, the Goodyear's and NTB's will tell you that you can't repair the puncture with a patch.

Happened to me a few weeks ago.

I had 2 nails in the same tire. One was on the last tread block to the outside. They were pretty bald too. I plugged them both myself with a plug kit from kragen and the car was fine, held air for about 2 weeks before I got my new wheels and tires. I'm sure it would have held as long as i needed it to (also based on prior experience), but it was a good excuse to spring for the new shoes...

Actually with the nail left in it, the tire would hold pressure reasonably well. The only thing that got me to the point of changing the tire was thinking that my wife will be driving the car around with my kid in it. The tires still had about 6/16" tread left in them. Well, I will probably keep the good ones, as a spare tire with a steel rim on it.

Also I had planned to change the tires some time next year anyway. Really wanted to get more life out of the factory Pilots.

Plus, the Boston winter is approaching... probably a good idea to get some new rubber on the RDX.
