1g RDX timing chain knocking

The local Garage has just told me I need to replace the timing chain at 175,000 miles. It is knocking. Does anyone know if it is possible to adjust and has anyone seen any posts on how to replace? Thank you in advance

May want to get a 2nd opinion - could just be the tensioner that needs replacement vs the whole chain. Typically the chain will outlast the engine, but like any part it could go bad earlier.

Thanks second opinion always worth the time the question though has anyone seen any videos of either replacement or tensioner replacement on the G1 RDX? I want to see what is involved.

Haven't seen a video, but hopefully this link is still good. I was able to retrieve the FSM from a dude that has been generously hosting it in his drop box for a while now.

If you look at VTEC Academy's youtube they have a series on the K23a1 engine. They tear apart that engine a few times and put it back together. Pretty sure they do the timing chain during one of the installs

It took me a while to realize my work laptop was blocking access. What a treasure trove of information thanks for sharing.

They claim the timing chain is good for the life of the engine, but if it fails it's the end of the engines life. I had mine replaced at 165,000 miles, along with the tensioner and guides so it won't take the engine out. You can get a second opinion, but I think a replacement would be good if you plan on keeping it.

Thank you for the insight do you remember what the cost of the replacement was and did they have to lift the enginee to do that?

Cheers

I do not. I had a bunch of stuff done at the same time. I figured since they were there I'd have everything done at once. It was before I started keeping my receipts in a book.

R u sure it’s not the vtc actuator? There are lots of videos of Hondas and Toyotas with Vtc rattling issues on cold start. They change the cam gear & all better.
