upgrade to touch screen
Hello,
i have Pioneer N5 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...n-Dash/AVIC-N5). Lo itve. It's touch screen and have tons of other functions ( have to be honest - don't use them all ).
But now i'm reading about built-in ( tech package) unit in RDX - and it seemed to be a step back .
Have you tried to replace the unit and what are the results?
// I do want to keep all integrated though
Thank you

My two cents... I think the NAVI in the RDX is very good.
As a point of reference, I had traded my 2007 RDX in for a 2008 Ridgeline and I opted not to get the factory navigation and went aftermarket. I started with the Pioneer AVICF700. Positively awful, buggy, etc. Pulled it and installed the Kenwood DNX8120. Nice unit and it worked, although it was slow. The Garmin NAV that was built in is no match for the NAVI in the RDX. Fast forward to now - I'm back in an RDX (2008) Tech and am much happier with the factory NAV.
I did have to add an ipod adapter (DICE) but it is all integrated nicely.
Knowing what I know now, no way I would get a base just to install an indash aftermarket unit.

I agree with Teledatageek. I think the GPS in the Tech is great. I much prefer the knob over the touch screen. My screen looks as clean as it did on the day I bought it. I hate looking at other peoples' GPS screens with finger prints, scratches, etc all over it. I know people have mentioned problems with various POS but I haven't had an issue yet. And I'm in Boston which undergoes construction 24/7 all year round.
My Lexus has a touch screen, and it took a little getting used to the knob- and voice-based controls on the RDX. Now that I've had both for awhile, I can see that they both have advantages and disadvantages. But the disadvantages are certainly not so horrible that I would even consider putting in an aftermarket unit just to be able to use a touch screen!
The main control I use while driving for the NAV is the zoom function, and it could not be more intuitive than twisting a detented knob to change the zoom.
We hardly ever enter addresses, etc. while driving, so it really does not make much difference--I'll take the clean screen.

Hello All,
I bought a base RDX thinking I didn't need NAVI. Now my wife drives the RDX and she can't find her way out of a paper bag. Has anyone installed a touch screen in a base RDX? Any information would help.
Thanks

A friend has a 2004 MDX and she swears she has a touch screen for Nav. Go figure.
I'll keep using my 2-year-old Garmin or TomTom. The RDX's GPS is 10 years behind them and a royal PITA to use. Some of the great things about the portables include adding information by computer and easy-to-use touch screen. Also, you can buy one for about the price for an RDX update.
It's a shame that Acura didn't go for a TomTom or a Garmin.
BTW, Do the base models actually have a screen, or is the dashboard closed up?

As I've said before, I prefer the clean screen - my knob based system is fine for me.
Glad you like the dial. I think a combination would be GREAT (choices, choices, choices) including the voice commands.
I have an iPhone and my garmins and tomtom are touch. So I accept screen smudges and clean frequently.
Now, if they would make them updatable via computer, or if we could input addresses and info via bluetooth or via computer (or even by SD) that would be even better.

But in any case, I much prefer knob-based. First off, I can't stand fingerprint smudges all over the screen, and secondly, the placement of nav screens on moderns cars are too far away from the driver. I would have to actually lean forward in order to reach the nav screen in the RDX.
